I don’t think we’re prepared culturally for the largest and most important city in America to openly have a Jew hater as mayor. America has been seen as a safe place for Jews for my whole lifetime, but that era is ending. What happens next? Do Jews just start participating in public life less? Do they move to Israel? Do they become Republicans? Not everyone will feel this way, but many will. The cultural consequences are going to be huge.

I have to admit, I had a strong inclination to not vote as an American citizen living abroad just a few weeks ago. I changed my mind officially when top Republican senators and the Republican presidential candidate propagated the lie that Haitian immigrants are eating pets. Any Jew should understand the implications of this type of rhetoric. It is a blood libel, an unfounded conspiracy used to whip up anger and perhaps violence against marginalized communities. As Sartre described in his essay on antisemitism: they know they’re lying and they’re enjoying it. Vote for Kamala. Vote for Democrats in your local and state races. And then, once they get elected, bully them ceaselessly into improving their Middle East policy, so that the Islamic Republic no longer receives cash for their campaign of terror. Bully them into understanding that Palestinians will never accept two states so long as they believe Israel is temporary. Bully them to address and tackle the Nazism descending upon American universities, which includes legislating limits on DEI. Bully them into understanding that anti-Zionism is antisemitism and that everything should be done to curb its influence. With enough noise, we can make a much needed change.

Hey @Tim_Walz, I am going to vote for you, but this statement flat out sucks. No mention of Hamas? No acknowledgement that Palestinians started this horrific war? Acting as though Netanyahu is holding up peace and not the terrorists sitting in Qatar penthouses, purchased with American aid money? The Democratic party can’t see it, but we have broken trust with the Jews that are the backbone of our party. Statements like this make it harder to win back that trust.
