Most of the places that had large waves last Sept are still exceedingly low. Lucky viral evolution the past 8 months. It may be weather-related issues too, very complicated to link empirically, IMO (e.g., 70 degrees could mean more outdoor time, or less HVAC use, competing factors). If this is a trend, rather than a blip, which is a 25% chance IMO, it could be related to cumulative excess deaths if more common among people who probabilistically catch or spread COVID more easily. There could be some long-term effect of vaccinations and infections at a marginal level (e.g., cutting the average infectious window from 7 days to 6.5 --> less forward transmission). If more of a blip than a trend, then there would be troubling times ahead. Possibly somewhere in between blip/trend though. We'll see. July 17 will let us know if we are on an optimistic scenario or not, when the post-July 4 data roll in.

May 4, 2026 (PMC COVID Update) SARS-CoV-2 transmission has slowly declined to an estimated 180,000 new daily infections. This is the lowest estimate since July 13, 2021. It's 3x the pandemic low of late May 2021. 🧵THREAD 1/4

A relative low means low compared to points since the pandemic onset. It does not imply an absolute low or that levels are safe. They are still 18x what Dr. Fauci said might be needed to approach more normal times. We're at 1.3 million estimated infections/week. 🧵THREAD 3/4

🛳️CRUISE SHIP OUTBREAK REPORT RELEASED—New crazy timeline data on cruise ship passengers who got sick and died of hantavirus (and 3 more sickened, including 1 critical). According to latest WHO report, index patient died within 5 days of symptoms. Crazier is that close contact #2 didn’t get hospitalized until 13 days later, and then died within 2 days of hospitalization. Case 3 didn’t get sick until 13 days after first index case died… but respiratory tested negative for 8 days until PCR confirmed it on 8th day; case 3 still hospitalized. Meanwhile, Case 4 got sick on April 28th with pneumonia, and died very quickly just 4 days later! Although uncommon, limited human‑to‑human transmission of HPS due to Andes virus has been reported in community settings involving close and prolonged contact. Secondary infections among healthcare workers have been previously documented in healthcare facilities, though remain rare. Hantavirus infections are associated with a case fatality rate of <1–15% in Asia and Europe and up to 50% in the Americas. While there are no specific treatment nor vaccines for hantavirus infections, early supportive care and immediate referral to a facility with a complete ICU can improve survival. A good reminder that cruise ships often have a variety of outbreaks if not careful.

One of the more concerning parts of this #Hantavirus (? Andes Virus) outbreak is that Case 2 boarded a flight while symptomatic (she died the day after the flight). Contact tracing is now ongoing for fellow passengers. A recent Andes Virus outbreak was published in NEJM outlining person-person transmission from Nov 2018 to Feb 2019 in Argentina. The table below shows the range of incubation periods. Over 50% (19/34) had incubation periods of more than 3 weeks. nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…

You can't lower gas prices by blurting out the names of a few Democrats. The administration needs to stop its crazed policies that cause so much economic pain. This is happening on Trump's watch because he doubled jet fuel prices by taking our country to war, which drove Spirit out of business. Obviously.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

Sean Duffy on Spirit: "To be really clear, yeah, jet fuel prices have gone up. This story was not written because of the Iran war. This story was written because of Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg ... " (Spirit says it was because of fuel prices)

Que puta pasada, los pelos de punta. Esto sí que es arte. Y los taurinos nos lo quieren vender como un animal agresivo, cuando solo busca cariño y comprensión. 👏👏👏

Just wanted to share something that was close to my late Mum's heart. Her garden. I've been left with the task of trying to keep it nice since she died but I'm not in her league when it comes to this. As well as the house to deal with, this is keeping me busy. Here's part of it:
