@RandomQueriant

I started this account to ask a favorite author a few questions. Hence the name. Now, he's mostly moved to Patreon, and I'm still hanging around.

On this day, because @elonmusk made the hard decision to leave money on the table in Brazil, where free speech is critically endangered, I subscribed to Premium. This was a decision I was putting off, as this is a pseudoanonymous account, but, well, he already had my phone#.

There is more than one axis. Individualism-Collectivism is just one axis that both systems land on roughly the same spot. You can have collectivist "conservatives". You can have individualist "liberals". The hippie movement would illustrate the latter, and "blue laws" are a product of the former. Even the basic Nolan Chart will put the two systems on the same SIDE of the box. Personally, I prefer the "Jennifer Government" one from the website/game "Nationstates".

@DefiyantlyFree Per AP-History he hid his far right-ism under more popular far left/ism. I asked how that would work if they’re opposites. I said gov’t control over “private” property is just leftist collectivism with a paper mask. The right believes in freedom, not gov’t control.

Yes, and strong central planning is a hallmark of both socialism AND fascism. But it appears it's been elevated to the status of a defining trait. Cold will burn you. Fire will burn you, so fire must be cold. Never mind that heat will also burn you. Keeping your company ONLY SO LONG AS your business fills the State's objectives is a fascist trait.

@RandomQueriant @DefiyantlyFree Most critical German companies had Nazi Party members on their boards, in upper management, or embedded within their companies. Don't comply and relatives disappeared or rivals took over your business. Nazi power over the economy was total and absolute.

@tuuu28283 Edit. 2^32 is roughly four BILLION, not four million. Thousand at ten, million at twenty, billion at thirty. Roughly. Roughly an extra 10^3 for every 2^10. Simple goof on my part.

The story I heard is, when they were working on Unicode, the number of characters they needed to get all of the ideographic characters in, left them with a large number of "excess". They ended up filling that excess with pictures. But, the smiley face, and the heart, and the skull and crossbones, have been in Western culture... at least since the sixties. Not as a TYPEWRITTEN character, though. Keep in mind. To capture everything in an 88-character set, you need over 64 characters. 64 is 2^6, and less than 88. So, you need at least 2^7 characters. 2^7 is 128. That's 40 extra characters. So, you get these old ASCII-art characters, like borders, gray scales, half-blocks, etc. Every time you add a bit, you DOUBLE the number of available spaces. Adding LARGE character sets INCREASES the chances of going over the point where you need more characters. Then, let's just say there are natural breakpoints. No point stopping at 2^7, when 2^8 is already one byte. No point stopping at 2^12, if 2^16 is two bytes. Japanese Kanji, and Chinese, added a LOT of characters. That pushed the number needed up to a point where they figured, might as well throw these in, too. 2^16 is, roughly, sixty-four thousand characters. 2^32 is, roughly, four million. (4,294,967,296. Close enough to four million in the same way that 1024 is close enough to 1000.)

"Interstellar travel is impossible." No. What you actually mean is it takes too long for a human lifespan. That's all. That has no bearing on the feasibility of getting assets/payload to another star system which imo is an entirely different conversation and entirely possible.

@Kshi_nippon In my corner of my country, gardeners will sometimes put extra produce in a wagon or wheelbarrow, with a sign inviting their neighbors to help themselves. But, yes, “honor system” does still work here.

One thing many foreigners find unbelievable about Japan 🇯🇵 In some rural areas, people sell vegetables through unmanned stands. No staff. No security guard. You simply take what you want and leave the money behind. And somehow… it often works. Could this exist in your country?

@QueenAnticommie @grok That's why the sentence of hanging in this country eventually had to be worded "shall hang from the neck until dead". Sometimes, people survived the initial fall that was meant to break the neck and kill you.
