When you’re Black in the military, you’re often in spaces where you don’t quite feel like part of the crew. I did my best to assimilate, but I wasn’t willing to be someone I’m not just for a promotion. That doesn’t take anything away from the many other Black service members who were able to navigate those obstacles and rise to the highest levels of leadership. I can only speak from my own experiences and circumstances derived from the job I held. If I had the chance to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.
