Confessions of an #indiedev 🎮 This is a bit of my game development story. Maybe others can relate or at least learn from my mistakes. There's a lot of sunk costs that go into something like this. What keeps a solo indie dev going with $0 budget, no publisher, and minimal support? Maybe this is you too. Running purely on faith in your vision of a dream game—while hoping others will see that vision too—is a hell of a drug. 💊 My game: Chronicles of Brim is the culmination of 6+ years of R&D into AI-controlled NPCs #RPG. I've dedicated every spare hour to completing CoB this year. A bit of history: It started with GPT-2/3 in 2020. All my prototype tests are still on YouTube. I had grand dreams of building Anticthon—a world-scale MMORPG filled with AI-controlled NPCs, procedural terrain using Mapbox data, live local weather, TTS, STT—all generated in real time. It was a top-notch system. After 5–6 rewrites I still wasn't happy with load times, but it had real potential. 🌍 Scope: 🚨This is such a common indie dev trap. I made a lot of mistakes, but my biggest was over-scoping everything. I kept piling on cool features, jumping from one shiny new idea to the next. In the end: 100 half-finished systems and many thousands of lines of code. Marketing: Spending 6 hours straight writing code is the polar opposite of talking to humans about it or posting unpolished content. That time pulls you away from actually finishing the game. And let's be honest—players are fickle and impatient. I had a decent YouTube following growing, but never grew fast enough, never viral. Players will happily playtest an alpha—and just as easily judge you on it and never come back. In the early stages, keeping their attention is a real challenge. 📉 In 2022–23 I tried to shift focus to marketing and finding investment for Anticthon. AI was all the rage and I was probably on a fairly short list of game devs doing this—but not anymore. I came off desperate, pitching a business plan stretched out another two years with no guaranteed outcome. Unsurprisingly… not many callbacks. 📵 Burnout: 🔥This is the real deal. Writing code and cutting demo videos at 3AM. Spending hours on a post that gets 3 likes. It takes serious willpower to keep going. In 2023 I tried to pivot to something simpler—but investors still weren't interested in 'games.' Lost most of my followers in the pivot. So yeah, I gave it up for about a year. Just couldn't go on. Now: The mental break turned out to be more useful than I expected. With a fresh head and some new ideas, I salvaged my AI system and core fundamentals and started building Chronicles of Brim. Scope kept reasonable this time. Whether I ever see a penny of investment or any outside help—it will get finished. AI API costs had dropped significantly, especially with the new @grok. I was running quite a bill with OpenAI just in testing. Grok's API—while not free—means I can offer the game at a much more reasonable price point. Critical for an unknown indie dev trying to make this thing actually work. 💪 My dream of an AI-driven RPG is finally happening. ✨ It's the kind of game I always imagined. Even back in the 80s—a D&D fan staring at a home computer, teaching myself to code—AI was pure science fiction. Just something you read about. 📖 Now it's not. The dream is achievable. Stay tuned for more. 🎲 #indiedev #gamedev #aigaming #ChroniclesOfBrim #AIinGames #AIGameDev

Back in 2023 I thought the look and feel were pretty much final, but fortunately it kept evolving and now it looks a lot different! How many iterations of art have you gone through? #steam #indiegame #gamedev

Clumsy attempt at hopping on the hype meme train 😅 Honestly, I don’t think DLSS 5 is some evil “AI slop” just yet… but hey, we’ll see how it plays out 👀 #indiedev #indiegames #gamedev #dlss #dlss5

@downraindc3d Love the style! If I hadn’t invested so much in other assets up to now I’d probably switch to all your stuff. Will see. Good work.
