@IrelandNna spoke to the minister at the time and he dismissed a return scheme as 'wouldn't work', same time he was ushering in the recycling scheme for cans and bottles. This rejection was ideological not evidence based or even given any thought.

@morningireland Re vape fires, up to eight people die each year from fires caused by combustible cigarettes. Vapes are not the problem, batteries are and the proper handling of them, the gov failed to grasp this, instead focusing on the nicotine content not the battery.

20 million people have died from smoking-related diseases in the EU since the 1992 EU snus prohibition. Imagine if the EU had encouraged switching to snus, incentivised pouch innovation, and gone all in to migrate nicotine use to low-risk products? EU still has 94m smokers, FFS.

New Zealand smoking rate used to be higher than Australia five years ago,

It was long, but could be watched over two nights.

In 1915, they banned two weekly Irish langauge newspapers (The Gaelic American and The Irish World) for promoting Irish independence.
