There has been some misinformation and speculation regarding my comments about using AI, so I want to be absolutely clear about the facts. Please see my statement below:

I get that. It’s gonna suck for many folks but this could also create more jobs. I hope I’m right on that and you’re wrong. But only time will tell. This is already underway and unless humans start a revolt (which the west won’t) we’ll need to navigate and embrace this. With necessary measures

It’s interesting in Vancouver and BC how some people now treat virtually any major infrastructure, technology, or economic development project as inherently evil or “neoliberal.” A city still needs jobs, investment, infrastructure, energy, and industries tied to the future economy. The real conversation should be how to build and regulate these things responsibly, while also addressing affordability and inequality.

@Rational__Left @KarmSumal The job loss will happen regardless With that in mind, do you not want to atleast benefit our communities with increased income? Or is that a bit too nuanced (or rational)of a discussion

@0xKeef @KarmSumal Reports and analyses point to a mix of factors: • Fewer entry-level opportunities — AI and automation are reducing traditional junior roles (e.g., data entry, admin, basic coding tasks) that young workers historically relied on for experience. nowtoronto.com

@KarmSumal Because of this, senior employees are leveraging AI to manage expanded workloads entirely on their own, eliminating the business need for junior associates to handle the groundwork

@KarmSumal Look at this ai response lol “Tech & Engineering: Senior developers use AI code assistants to write boilerplate code, drastically curbing the hiring of junior software engineers.”

@KarmSumal Creative & Marketing: Content generation, basic copywriting, and introductory graphic design are increasingly managed via generative AI tools, squeezing out internships and junior creator roles.

@KarmSumal Corporate & Professional Services: In fields like law, accounting, and consulting, corporate leaders note that junior recruitment is "flattening" because automated systems execute discovery, basic legal research, and financial reporting.

Not trying to change the narrative, I’m discussing it lol. I get the fear. Definitely will be job loss. But that happens with all tech. People said the same thing about the internet, automation, and literally every major technological shift. We saw job growth, overall. Will ai be the same. Only time will tell. But AI is coming whether we in Vancouver participate or not. The question is whether we build infrastructure, attract investment, and create high-paying industries here or sit on the sidelines while other cities benefit. Also, homelessness in Vancouver didn’t suddenly start because of AI. That crisis has been growing for years due to housing costs, addiction, mental health failures, and population growth. Pretending AI data centres caused it is unserious. Those sites were never gonna be housing.

WOW!! “The Donald J. Trump and Jeffrey Epstein Memorial Reading Room," has just opened thanks to a US transparency advocacy group in New York. All the files from the Epstein Files Transparency Act are there in 3,437 volumes, all numbered and organized on shelves. A print-out of all the files released by the US Department of Justice, roughly 3.5 million pages relating to financier and convicted sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein are there!

The DTES status quo has failed everyone residents, vulnerable people, frontline workers, and small businesses alike. Decades of massive spending, growing bureaucracy, and endless excuses have produced worsening disorder, open drug use, unsafe streets, and human suffering on a scale that should be unacceptable to everyone. At some point, questioning the system isn’t “anti-compassion.” It’s recognizing that the current model is trapping people in crisis instead of helping them escape it. Why would anyone want to vote for a left wing party at this point?

The federal government, Westbank and TELUS have announced three new AI data centres in B.C., including two in Vancouver; one at West Georgia and Beatty, and the second in Mt. Pleasant. It's a multibillion-dollar investment in Canadian data sovereignty and our city. #vanpoli

I won’t apologize for standing up for my neighbours, residents & businesses in downtown Vancouver who want a safe & healthy community- and who want to see those suffering with addictions get TREATMENT - not just another chaotic taxpayer-funded room to use illicit drugs. #vanpoli

WOWWWW. The masks slipped all the way off of Mayor @KenSimCity and Councillor @PeterMeiszner this morning. They REALLY don’t care about the city’s most vulnerable. I’m in shock. I watched the media briefing they gave about the new overdose prevention site opening downtown and I can’t even believe the venom with which they attacked the plans for a new site to provide supervised consumption and healthcare services downtown. For all the lip service these two have given in the past about how they realize it’s “important” to prevent people from dying, they really let it fly in this unhinged rant about protecting businesses and developers. GROSS 🤮 Again: this neighbourhood has the second highest rate of overdose in the city, fourth highest in the province. And he says he’ll do whatever he can to prevent it from opening. THAT’S SOME SHADY AF BULLSHIT RIGHT THERE. #VANpoli #ToxicDrugCrisis #OPS

The previous OPS sites on Seymour and Howe became focal points for street disorder and open drug use. Rather than continuing to push failed approaches, we need the Province to get people off the streets and into the care they need. Vancouverites deserve better, everyone deserves better.
