It was great to stand with the ABC Vancouver team today to speak directly about how we are going to make the Park Board work for Vancouverites once again. We've been hearing the frustration about the way the Park Board and its facilities are managed. Vancouver deserves better. An ABC majority on Park Board will focus on delivering new community centres, safe parks, free swimming lessons, affordable recreation programs, and accessible public swimming pools. The COVID-era restrictions that still make no sense at Kits Pool are indicative of a much greater problem. Swimming should be accessible for everyone. Residents and families shouldn’t have to compete online or plan weeks in advance just to enjoy a public pool. The choice in this election is clear: an ABC majority that will deliver better facilities, more affordable programs, and long-overdue reforms, or candidates who support the status quo on Park Board and have contributed to years of ineffective management. #abcvancouver #publicsafety #affordability

Today, Mayor Ken Sim announced that ABC Vancouver will no longer seek to dissolve the elected Vancouver Park Board and will field Park Board candidates in the 2026 municipal election. Vancouver continues to carry the greatest burden of B.C.'s mental health, addiction and public safety crises. Yet once again, the Province has announced new involuntary care beds while excluding Vancouver. When it comes to harm reduction, Vancouver is expected to do more. When it comes to treatment and recovery, we're left behind. That has to change. Enough is enough.

For too long, Vancouver was falling behind on the basics. Years of underinvestment left roads and sidewalks cracked, damaged, and increasingly difficult to navigate for families, seniors, and those with mobility challenges. Despite the City's efforts and repeated calls for action, the Province has still not followed through on its commitment to remove the provincially operated SROs from Granville Street. At the same time, it continues to pursue plans for a drug consumption site at 900 Helmcken. Councillor Peter Meiszner met down with Alan Goodall, owner of Aura Nightclub, to hear firsthand how repeated flooding and ongoing issues associated with the nearby provincially operated SRO have affected his business. Alan shared just how difficult it has been to operate and invest in downtown while dealing with these ongoing challenges. It's been difficult hearing from residents across Vancouver about how ignored they feel by the provincial government and Vancouver Coastal Health when it comes to their own safety and the safety of their employees. Sunan Spriggs, owner of CityLux Boutique, shared how her staff often have to lock the door while at work and don't feel safe travelling to and from their jobs. Granville Street came alive this summer, and we're keeping that momentum going! Council has approved extending the Granville Street Pedestrian Zone and eligible temporary patios through Labour Day, giving local businesses greater certainty, supporting jobs, and helping us gather more data as we build a safer, more vibrant downtown for everyone.

The Granville Pedestrian Zone is staying through to the end of the summer!  Despite disappointing opposition from Councillors Pete Fry and Rebecca Bligh, your ABC Vancouver team voted to extend the overwhelmingly popular Granville Street Pedestrian Zone and temporary patios through Labour Day. It's been incredible to see Granville Street transformed into a safe and vibrant destination where people can walk, gather, enjoy local restaurants and patios, and support the businesses that make downtown Vancouver so special.  This extension gives businesses the opportunity to continue building on that momentum while giving Vancouver families and visitors even more time to enjoy an affordable day out and experience the city at its best. Yesterday we celebrated Canada Day 🇨🇦 honoring a nation that gave Chinese Canadians an opportunity to build & give back. In our culture, burning a person’s likeness is reserved for the dead. It opens the wounds of the height of anti-Asian sentiment post-COVID I hoped never to feel again. Whatever you think of the Mayor’s politics, this is not protest. It is racialized intimidation. Today, after Canada's historic win and halfway through the World Cup, I'm proud to be joined by our Police Chief Steve Rai, Fire Chief Karen Fry, and City Manager Donny van Dyk for one simple reason: to say thank you for the way you've celebrated throughout the entire World Cup so far, and especially after Canada's historic win on Sunday.   Over the past several weeks, Vancouver has welcomed the world. Our streets have been full of families, fans, visitors, and local businesses enjoying an incredible World Cup.   What has stood out most isn't just the excitement—it's the way people have looked out for one another and celebrated safely.   We've seen minimal police incidents throughout the World Cup, and I want to sincerely thank everyone for making that possible.   To everyone who has come downtown, visited Fan Fest, and other public viewing areas—thank you for keeping things respectful.   To the Vancouver Police Department, Vancouver Fire Rescue Services, City staff, volunteers, event organizers, businesses, and everyone working behind the scenes – thank you for making this World Cup such a safe, exciting, and memorable event.   As we head into the second half of the World Cup, I'm excited for us all to keep this going.   Canada has made it to the round of 16, so let's keep cheering them on in the same safe way we've celebrated throughout this tournament.   We’re all here today to simply say thank you, Vancouver.    And if you see a city worker cleaning streets or a police officer and firefighter keeping things safe, reach out to them and say thank you.    Let’s keep this going, Go Canada Go.
