Roman Coins in Thoddoo — 1958–59 Discovery In 1958–59, an excavation on the island of Thoddoo uncovered not only the ruins of a Buddhist dagaba and a buried statue, but also a cache of extraordinary small finds: a coral-stone casket containing rings and coins, nested within silver and gold containers. Among them was a remarkable surprise — a Roman Republican denarius, minted in 90 BC by Caius Vibius Pansa in Rome. Identified by the British Museum, it may have circulated for decades within the Roman Empire before somehow reaching the Maldives. Other silver coins and rings were also present, with some locals even claiming they were “coins of Alexander the Great.” The discovery stirred excitement and confusion. Islanders rushed to claim the treasures as their own, shouting about “diamond hoards” and snake eggs. Abdul Hakeem Hussein Manik, who was part of the team, later reflected that these objects showed how far Maldivian connections once reached across the ancient world. But the treasures did not last. After being transported to Malé, the Roman coin and other objects disappeared — stolen, and lost forever. This is the third of four posts on the Thoddoo discoveries of 1958–59. 15 years ago, Dembélé used to post his pictures on Facebook, but the comments section was empty, no friends, no family, no loved ones, except for one person. That person was Moustapha Diatta, who, at just 4–5 years old, was Dembélé’s closest friend. They shared everything together, even the football dreams that Dembélé carried in his heart. 😮 At a time when nobody seemed to like Dembélé, Moustapha was his only emotional support. He told him: *“We’ll stay friends until I see you at the top, because I’m certain that one day you’ll be the best.”* Years passed, and Dembélé truly became one of the best. At that moment, neither of them could hold back their emotions, and they cried when Dembélé, during a ceremony, drifted into their memories and spoke about their friendship and childhood in front of the whole world. The friendship of Dembélé and Moustapha is the perfect example of the saying: “Friendship, as it should be.”
