The gulf between my experience of singing and his is VAST. The stuff that makes the distance personally, socially, politically? Well, speculate for yourselves. But it includes the sheer luck of health and privilege that’s mine. I don’t know his name. But you should hear him.

I step out of Advocate’s Close today onto The Royal Mile and an elder man is singing by St Giles. Old school true and beautiful. Irish. In a parallel life or another time he’d have stravaiged with Luke Kelly. In Edinburgh 2023, his hat is on the pavement. 1/5 contd.
