This afternoon he prayed Mincha at the Jewish Center on West 86th Street—the great pale-stone building raised more than a century ago by Jews who intended to remain. Visible Jews in this city have learned to perform calculations other New Yorkers rarely make. Which subway is safest? Should I cover my kippah? Should my son tuck in his tzitzis? Is the man behind me merely walking in the same direction? Fear does not always arrive screaming. Sometimes it is a hand reaching automatically toward the top of the head. This is how a free Jewish life contracts: one small calculation at a time. For months the boundary between political protest and open menace has collapsed. Synagogues have become demonstration sites. Jewish students have been surrounded. “Zionist” is increasingly used not to describe an opinion but to revoke a person’s moral standing. The Jew is told that none of this is about him. But it is. Gone are the days where we didn’t have to scan the crowds around us.
