HOT TAKE: Instead of dropping the G5 schools from the playoffs, and eventually the ACC and Big12. Let's drop the SEC. They can play by themselves like they like to do, and the rest of us can get back to College Football instead of hearing about hypothetical victories.
First Take@FirstTake

"The Group of Five with South Florida ... that division really has no business playing. That's like letting the Triple-A best team into the Major League playoffs." @finebaum believes the best college football teams should make the CFP 😅

NEW: Steve Sarkisian took a shot at Texas Tech while discussing how the College Football Playoff Committee factors strength of schedule👀 “There's a team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes, we could go undefeated, and they'll probably make the CFP this year.” (via @AnwarRichardson) on3.com/college/texas-…

@jjrocke @ScottDochterman But on a larger scale, about 10-12 teams control the ncaa. Most teams in the big 10/SEC are along for the ride. Those schools are no different than the big 12 schools. They just have rich siblings

Some of those schedules were in 2025. That's not forward, that's backwards. Even going back to the 2010s, SEC teams regularly played top teams from other conferences in the regular season. Alabama alone played Michigan, Florida State USC, Penn State (x2), Wisconsin, Louisville, and many others all in the regular season in the 2010s. Not even counting South Carolina, Clemson (remember how good they were in the 2010s?) played 9 Top Level SEC teams in the regular season in the 2010s. There was the Tennessee-Oklahoma series, Michigan-Florida, Tennessee Oregon, Auburn-Oregon, LSU-Wisconsin series (when Wisconsin was good), LSU-Texas, many other SEC teams had aggressive out of conference scheduling too. I'm curious when exactly you think the SEC *wasn't* playing tough teams, since you say they try to avoid them. That point has been proven totally wrong.

I listened to this in it's entirety with full context and the point he's making is valid, which is that the Big 10 and SEC have the absolute authority to make the final decision. The crucial detail he got wrong however, is that he says the Big 10 and Fox are against the 24 team playoff. Not only does the Big 10 support the 24 team playoff, it was their idea.

Still any Big 12/ACC fans that support this guy?

Ah, I don't blame you for falling for that one. Misinformation that's been peddled by haters. The SEC requires all teams to play P4 out of conference opponents (see attached post) and plays FCS opponents at a level comparable to other conferences (see reply to attached post). Here is a list of every regular season out of conference game opponent by SEC teams for the 2025 and 2026 seasons: Ohio State (x2) (National Champ 2024) Notre Dame (x2) (National Runner Up 2024) Miami (Runner Up 2025) Michigan (x2) (National Champ 2023*) Utah Louisville (x3) Georgia Tech (x3) Clemson (x4) (ACC Champ 2024) Arizona State (x2) (Big 12 Champ 2024) Minnesota Florida State (x4) (ACC Champ 2023) NC State (x2) Kansas (x2) Wisconsin Virginia Tech (x2) Baylor (x2) Syracuse The SEC plays top tier teams from other conferences regularly, and a healthy balance of mid and low tiers as well. The claim that the SEC avoids all good teams is totally false. This is why I created my account. To point out incorrect claims. x.com/SECSupremacyCF…

@SECSupremacyCFB @flatland_sports If we had uniform schedules, then we could do that. Problem is you have teams like Indiana and the SEC who avoid all good teams and just play cupcakes and themselves

I take the Josh Pate approach here. It doesn't matter if there are 40(!) teams that could win the championship, that doesn't mean make a 40 team playoff! The regular season IS the playoff. Make teams play desperate and win games in the regular season, the way CFB has ALWAYS been. Miami got lucky, realisticaly they shouldn't have had a shot at a championship, but we expanded just in time. The point is, the Louisville and SMU games were PART of the playoff. EVERY GAME is part of the playoff. That's why the regular season is so intense. Your proposal deletes that urgency.

@RealMerked8 @flatland_sports You want to exclude two entire years of the era just because it doesn't fit your narrative? Typical. Biased. No cherrypicking for me.

@SECSupremacyCFB @flatland_sports Basically, after Miami proved the whole thing corrupt you want to keep out the ACC/Big12 because they are getting better. Thanks for being honest at least.

@RealMerked8 @flatland_sports Most of the people arguing for expansion are angry G5 fans. Gotta let them in too. 100 teams is the minimum expansion I will accept. Otherwise we are just letting corrupt P4 leagues have an unfair monopoly.

@SECSupremacyCFB @flatland_sports But see, you have to include years where NIL was not a factor. It takes time for players to move and for talent to development. You cannot include 2021 and 2022 into that because NIL hadn’t changed the landscape, it was in its infancy.

@RealMerked8 @flatland_sports I'm sorry but the facts are here. If you take the ENTIRE NIL era into consideration (not just a cherrypicked small sample) the SEC has the BEST record of ANY league against non-con P4 opponents.
