Every time Scottie Pippen talks shit, just remember he’s a guy from Arkansas named Scottie. Everything else it just circumstantial.

I wrote about how the trades that gave the Timberwolves the best era in franchise history have also probably capped them below the Thunder and Spurs. On what got Minnesota here, and the swings they might take next: cbssports.com/nba/news/timbe…

Did I just hear Stan Van Gundy praise the Spurs for drafting Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle?

@SamQuinnCBS I would think that the Houston debacle has changed it, but the price will be lower, hence a better team around him. Maybe not though. Ayo - Bones/TSJ Ant - TSJ Jaden - KD KD - Naz Rudy - Joan That's a pretty solid rotation with shooting, length and defense.

As much as I despise SGA and the Thunder, a Wemby ring at this point in time would be the worst thing for the sport

I don't think what Edwards did here was okay. You really can't two-hand shove a guy in the back as he's getting into the air, it's simply dangerous. And it was weird that he'd argue the call.

Was the “Wolves should trade Randle” stuff been going on for a while and just picking up heat from this series, or has that been a thing?

It’s hard because talking 2012 draft they skipped Dame, Barnes, or Drummond, 2013 requires major hindsight blinders to dog on them, but 2014 they effectively took Kevin Love with the #1 pick. So their luck got them Kyrie, Kevin Love, and the ability to get Bron back. Good FO move
Sam Quinn@SamQuinnCBS

Yes, the Cavs were one of the other remarkably lucky teams in history. It's the luckiest stretch any team has ever had in raw terms. It just came in a relatively weak stretch of top picks. Ironically, the one No. 1 pick they missed out on, Anthony Davis, was the best of the run.

@Betsycashmoney @SamQuinnCBS How many people called out the 2024 draft as a super weak class, but now everyone’s saying it wasn’t because Castle is good? There would be far more “great” draft classes if truly bad teams were run better.

@SamQuinnCBS But TIMING is also a form of luck... So you're not really that lucky if you win the #1 pick during a stretch of weak draft classes...

@SamQuinnCBS San Antonio receiving the 4th, 1st, and 2nd picks consecutively, given their pre-draft lotto odds, was 1 in 1080. I'd say that's pretty lucky

I think the best way to contextual San Antonio’s luck is this. When the Cavs drafted LeBron, they had one more lotto pick. They got Luke Jackson because Andre Iguodala went one slot ahead. Imagine if they got Iguodala, then LeBron got hurt in 2005 and they jumped for Chris Paul. The Cavs got lucky getting LeBron. Everyone gets lucky when they win a lottery. But that’s standard luck. What happened for the Spurs was something more substantial than that. That doesn’t mean they weren’t smart. They’re one of the smartest organizations in the NBA. But it’s just ridiculous to pretend they aren’t among the biggest beneficiaries of lottery luck in NBA history.
Sam Quinn@SamQuinnCBS

Spurs fans are gonna have to make peace with the role the lottery played in all of this if they want to enjoy their next decade of internet existence. They got lucky. Really, historically, annoyingly lucky. They were also VERY smart. But they got lucky. It happened. Own that.

Everything about everything in basketball and life in general relies on different degrees of luck. The fanbase isn’t rejecting the role luck has played in the rebuild, we’re rejecting the narrative that the team was just handed success instead of navigating an opportunity well.
