Would people be interested in these sort of share cards? This is just a quick sketch but I could make one for films, diaries etc so they can be shared to insta stories or be copied/downloaded

@Real_nimrod07 @OptimoPrincipi Agreed, I did not get the sense that Odysseus felt any shame about being a warrior or going to war. Nolan’s Odysseus seems to feel bad specifically about the Trojan horse and the fact that so many of his men die as a result of that. Not perfectly faithful but still enjoyable.

Emily Wilson after watching the Odyssey: ‘The film presents an Odysseus who feels very bad about things that he's done in war, and is struggling to process them in a very modern, psychiatrised way – and needs drugs to do so! He seems to feel bad about being a warrior, and we never actually see him get to do much warrioring ... Nolan makes the protagonist a likeable, all-American hero; Homer's Odysseus wants glory, and he wants to get spoils from the sack of a city! I kept looking in vain for a sense that this was a film about glory. This is a film that has an interest in shame, but I don't think it has any interest in glory.’

@Real_nimrod07 @amywelborn2 It's not that it strays away from the text verbatim it's that so little appears to remain. Odysseus would be amazingly foreign to us moderns but a more faithful adaption would allow us to at least identify Odysseus in the modern retelling

Odyssey translator Emily Wilson: "I don’t think it’s a complicated movie. And I don’t think it’s even about a complicated man. I think it’s a quite simple action hero movie about an action hero who feels bad about being an action hero."
Derek Thompson@DKThomp

I talked to famed translator Emily Wilson about Christopher Nolan's Odyssey, in a wide-ranging conversation about shifting norms of translation, the strangeness of Homer's world, and the online discourse about the movie Here's what she said about the film: - "It is a big spectacle, and it is a fun time at the movies. My teenagers really loved it, and it was fun to go with my teenagers. It’s a fun summer action movie." - "I don’t think it’s a complicated movie. And I don’t think it’s even about a complicated man. I think it’s a quite simple action hero movie about an action hero who feels bad about being an action hero." - "When the casting was announced, it was The Talented Mr. Ripley that gave me hope in terms of where this might go with Matt Damon as Odysseus. Homer’s Odysseus is a complicated man, polytropos ... [But] Matt Damon in the film is traumatized Jason Bourne." - "There’s no Cyclops trick. There’s no comedy. Matt Damon isn’t required to be be scheming. We don’t even see him building the Trojan Horse, which I thought was an interesting choice. We have this tech hero, but we don’t see him building his tech. We see him agonizing about the results of the tech." derekthompson.org/p/emily-wilson…

@artwithinpod I do disagree with her point of Odysseus feeling bad about being a warrior. He doesn't, him raising hell against all the suitors prove that. Nolan's Odysseus feels bad about raiding a city using a trick, taking advantage of the Trojan's naivety

@artwithinpod Every student of the classics will nitpick if you stray away from the source material, and that's okay. That's their job in a way.

I’m getting a huge number of reports from THE ODYSSEY viewers telling me there was applause at the end of their screening, which normally almost never happens outside of premieres. This film is becoming a phenomenon.

For the love: THE GODS ARE NOT ABSENT IN NOLAN’S ODYSSEY. Athena is a god. Callypso is a minor god. Poseidon is mentioned constantly. Zeus brings destruction to Odysseus’ crew Did you notice the “thunder” - it rolls when the gods are “talking.” The “gods” are everywhere.

@airbagg3d Watch Nolan’s next film be a psychological horror version of Dante’s Inferno and watch the IMAX 70mm tickets sell out two years in advance lmao

@FearedBuck People have said it like a bajillion times. You CANNOT make a historically accurate adaptation of a FICTIONAL TALE. As Robert Pattinson so eloquently puts it: “SOMEBODY GET THESE BEGGARS OUT OF HERE”.

@Jay2Goat_ I do think Nolan’s film is the least conservative lmao. Odysseus is literally having PTSD episodes from the fall of Troy and is questioning everything he did with his trick. It’s quite progressive thinking tbf

I don't really care about Christopher Nolan's politics but I'm also confused on why people are using The Odyssey film to say that he has conservative ideals like we gotta think for a second an adaptation of a 3000 year old poem is probably going to be a bit conservative by nature

I've only seen a handful of Nolan movies but the most interesting thing to me is that they often seem surreally confused about their own narrative stakes. What is DiCaprio's motivation in Inception? Why does Oppenheimer kinda imply an era of atomic warfare that did not occur?
