@Hogdale_ If by “there” you mean the minor leagues, I agree.

@EdHand89 Being disappointed by a catcher’s offensive production is just unhealthy, in my opinion.

False as Jarren Duran, Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Trevor Story all exist.

Carlos Narváez has been the most disappointing Red Sox player of 2026 so far. True or False?

@ggeiss_mlb I wonder if they got sniped on some overslot targets given that the first rounder definitely seemed like they were looking for a haircut. Though as a Wisconsin resident, I’m excited for Jace!

Boston Red Sox Day 1 Draft Recap:
1.20: INF Jake Schaffner
• instant grade: B+ (📈)
(C)67: OF Owen Hull
• instant grade: B+
3.96: INF Jace Mataczynski
• instant grade: C+
Not a terrible day but I've seen better. Or should I say, expected more. If I'm being honest, I entered today completing believing the Red Sox were taking Dietz/Rabe and Roberts Jr. in the first two rounds based on what I heard from a number of people. But things change.
Schaffner and Hull are two high quality ballplayers. Perhaps it's not the best pure value compared to recent years, but these guys are going to impact the org at the major league level in some way. I'm really excited about Schaffner after hearing what some in-house folks had to say about him — the industry valued him a lot more than the public perception did.
Mataczynski is all about player development. There is a lot to be done but I can see the vision. I did definitely have a sizable number of prospects ahead of him on my board, however, so that's where the grade comes from. Not to mention going underslot with a ton of great pitching available in Rounds 1-2, I figured they'd make a big splash later.
That remains to be seen. Overall, a solid Day 1. I'm hyped to get back to work on Day 2!
OVERALL DAY 1 GRADE: B-

@IanMBrowne Payton Tolle stuck in an airport terminal feels like a sitcom episode.

@normal_jake_ I appreciate these reminders. My oldest (10) has latched on to baseball and is the best player on his rec league team, and he wants to try out for a grade school-to-high school feeder team. I’m trying really hard to let his interest drive it and not get carried away - it’s tough!

@EdHand89 The system is imbalanced right now, but college pitching/low minors position players with high upside is probably the better type of imbalance to have.

@ScoringChanges Good teammate saved his pitcher an ER because the runner probably scores on the ball that was dropped anyway.

@EdHand89 It’s the number of teams above them more than the number of games back that concerns me.
English

@ggeiss_mlb @tylermilliken_ Based on that, could he maybe be a target for an underslot bonus?
English

@tylermilliken_ That’s a pretty extreme jump (I mocked him to the Sox in one of the later rounds a few months ago but his stock has gone up a lot since). Prob a Rd 2-3 grade rn. But he’s definitely a demon and the underlying stuff is beautiful.

Willson has about as pretty a swing as a right-handed batter can have.

@EdHand89 She was stage manager for our college drama department’s main fall production and I auditioned. We started dating the next year after leading a group of underclassmen to see a play in town - the bus back broke down, which gave us lots of extra time to talk.
English

@tylermilliken_ That’s a play I’m so grateful to have watched live so I could be completely floored by it.

A few hours after the conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV last year, I was standing in the courtyard of the Augustinianum, the headquarters of the Augustinian Order to which Robert Francis Prevost belongs, just a few feet from St. Peter's Basilica.
I had just finished helping out ABC News (we were, providentially, using the rooftop of the Augustinianum) and they wanted to interview me about the new pope "on the street." I was quite moved by his election and actually wept after we had finished up the coverage on the set.
It was around 9 PM, and people were already coming to the Augustinianum to snap photos of the "former home" of the new pope. One group of sisters posed by the sign affixed to the outside of the building.
Not surprisingly, in addition to many reporters, I was standing among several excited black-habited Augustinians in the courtyard.
I said to one, dressed in a clerical shirt, "Are you an Augustinian?" "Yes!" he said. "Congratulations!" I said.
An American, he was very friendly and very excited. We joked a bit about having a Jesuit pope and now an Augustinian pope.
Then I said, "Do you know him?"
He said, "Who, Bob?"
I laughed and said, "Yes, I guess: Bob."
"I've known him for 40 years," he said.
I said, "I know him a little from the Synod, and he seems wonderful, but what's he like?"
"Oh well," he said, "you know we elected him twice as Prior General: the first time because we really liked him; the second time because he had done a great job." (Being elected twice as superior general by your brothers in a religious order is some feat.)
"But what's he like?" he said, repeating my question. "Bob is smart, kind, humble, a hard worker, a great listener, quite reserved, close to the poor, and beloved by our men. Everyone loves Bob."
Then he paused.
"But he's no pushover."
I think we saw that today.

@AmericanNumbers The people thinking the return was light seem crazy to me. They got out from under a bad contract (that will ultimately sink a rival) and got assets in the process.

This. The Cs conclusion from this season was clearly "We can move on"

Like it or not the Celtics are the calculator team. They’re building their team on the spreadsheet. You don’t have to agree but hopefully it helps with some of your confusion

@redsoxstats My worry is that as soon as he gets to AAA, he’s potential MLB depth and I don’t want him getting rushed up the way Marcelo was.

Arias had another great month in June: .416 OBP, .218 ISO, 14 BB, 14 K. I get the point made that Double-A has the higher-end talent, but at this point I'm far more interested to see Arias regularly face crafty MLB-experienced guys in AAA. I feel like there is value in that.

With Franklin Arias dominating Double-A, the obvious question is: When will he get promoted to the WooSox? trib.al/u4Iljks
