Folks have been sending me this photo of a curious beast depicted on rock art from Brazil- short tail, pointed ears, long fangs, maybe stripes… could this be a prehistoric human’a attempt to portray Smilodon populator, South America’s top cat in the late Pleistocene?

This painting shows up in Unnatural History Channel's recent video. It reminded me how I think that its staged animal fights were a kind of animal cruelty that we today cannot fully grasp. Honestly, all I can say is, 1000% we are better off that we cannot.

Piatnitzkysaurus floresi recently got an osteology of it’s axial skeleton to go with the 2025 osteology of it’s appendicular skeleton. It gives a great look at an Early Jurassic Carnosaur, as reconstructed here by me. This specimen is of the Holotype. (1/2)

@ausar_the Saw it on the big screen in 1991, a re-release of Fantasia here in Italy... I was 4 years old, already obsessed with dinosaurs, already saw The Land Before Time a couple of years before, let me just say it is still one of my all time favorite pieces of paleo-media EVER.
