@BEASTgroyper It might have worked if it was just lights, but hardware can now render so many reflections that the problem compounds. Since every surface is curved each one ends up having a vivid specular highlight.

Yellow paint again. Devs correct and wrong. Pause this video over the room with invisible enemies. It’s so psychotically murky and smeared with cheap spammed gfx i can’t even discern the ‘visual’ enemies. Every image of this game has 20 hues of light and shade over colour. Awful.

they really outdid themselves this time with campaign evolved

@NeverDive10 @GameOrDie007 There was a big leap between 2003 and 2004 alone. Vietcong and NoLF2 -> Far Cry 1, Half Life 2, Doom 3 transition. Then by 2007 you had Crysis, which was indicative of the flatting S curve. Modern stuff is a couple of steps removed from it.

English

@GameOrDie007 To further prove this point, it’s the same amount of time between the release of Mega Man 2 (‘88) & Ocarina of Time (‘98) as there has been between MGS V (‘15) & Black Ops 7 (‘25)

Ray-Tracing had ruined and held back gaming for the last 8 years. Since then, the meager visual improvements have been met with the astronomical performance and costly hardware requirements. Tanking FPS and making games crawl.
Physics were the future, and everyone dropped it for shiny puddles and lights that looks pretty much the same.

@Zmei_Hhsss Requiem for a Dream off the top of my head is one that didn't fall into that trap, although ultimately its execution is quite subpar, too gratuitous in the music department trying to drum up drama

Terrible how short lived Carruth's career turned out to be. Topiary dead and buried; chasing $100k in funding for Upstream Colour for a decade after Primer. Compare to Cameron jumping from being a janitor / truck driver to being hired as director within 3 years.
Avelum@novusolus
@watchingspirals In an enlightened age we would be discourse on the Primer timelines.

@realKalos I remember imagining the insane levels of quality that we would hit 20 years in the future as I played these. And here we are.

@RedKahina @Logo_Daedalus Of course, on the other hand, wars of the future may simply seek to delineate an area on a map and make it uninhabitable through stand off munitions on key infra + brain draining through 'neutral' third parties. But then China might drop the cost of hardening infra as well..
English

@RedKahina @Logo_Daedalus A sharp drop in the cost of electronics and the proliferation of open source agents that can 10-fold coding productivity opens a huge can of worms when it comes to asymmetric warfare. Invading and actually holding land may become exorbitantly expensive.
English

The future of western rentier hegemony depends upon compute monopolies. China producing open source alternatives is like what they’ve already done with drone production— if Iran can hold Hormuz now it’s because China produced low cost drones & the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. Open source AI is the future of sovereignty for any state challenging unipolar hegemony. If China wasn’t producing open source AI alternatives, no other state is positioned to do it.

@norvid_studies Pessimistically I think this just sorts people into their respective Peter-Wattsian buckets faster e.g. Heaven-users, bicamerals, probably some vampires tbh

Why? Jones was the key person, and he was already withdrawing after 2. Staten could have carried it, but he was also not involved in any great capacity after 2.

@Steve_Sailer Mourinho's treble winning Inter Milan of 2010 is probably the best example of a suffocating defense. Nobody seemed to be able to replicate it, however.

@Jman19931 Of the little I played, it had an interesting approach in making some of the minor 'quests' branching eg. you could find a uniform to get past a guard, or if you didn't figure that out you could just fight.

Just saw that Dark Earth is getting a Steam release, another game I've been interested in playing. It's like Alone in the Dark/Resident Evil, but in a post-apocalyptic dark fantasy setting with more emphasis on melee combat.

@vaugmoss @joeviewtiful22 There are very subtle threads that run through all of the games starting from Minotaur all the way to CE. Marathon is the most connected though.
