@feelsdesperate Do you think if the USA had half the population, the wages would be higher because of the restricted labor pool?

I feel like this sort of framing always makes libertarians look bad because it’s so obvious they’re refusing to engage with what’s at issue. Labor arbitrage favors employers. An expanded labor pool in general leads to lower wages. You’re not ‘insecure’ or a ‘loser’ for not wanting an expanded labor pool that reduces your earnings. In fact, there’s really nothing more politically legitimate than advocating for your economic interests. Libertarians need to make the case that expanding the labor pool is good for society as a whole, at scale, and it’s something that they’re having an increasingly hard time doing for a number of reasons. However, trying to argue people are somehow deficient for pursuing legitimate interests is completely unpersuasive and isn’t going to win anyone over.

It's almost impossible to view these people as anything other than insecure downwardly-mobile losers afraid of competition from more talented immigrants.

According to the 75-page manifesto tied to the San Diego Islamic Center attack, here are the facts about the shooters based on their own words: They hated Jews. They also hated Islam. They were not trans, they were incels. They hated women. Their hatred for women was only surpassed by their hatred for Jews. They hated Black people. They hated all immigrants. They hated gay and trans people. They were not MAGA. They did not like Trump, and they did not identify with the right. They openly encouraged the left to take out Trump and JD Vance. How did we reach such an insane level of radicalization that literal kids are carrying out attacks and then taking their own lives afterward?

Another way of putting this: If you want a simple, no-cost way to increase tissue levels of EPA (“fish oil fat”), you can just lower intake of linoleic acid (“seed oil fat”). The new RCT (Image 1) showing that a high linoleic acid (ω-6) diet suppresses tissue EPA (ω-3) is consistent with past work in human tissue showing that supplementing with ω-3 suppresses tissue ω-6s (Image 2). The human work is consistent with animal studies where we know the underlying mechanism: linoleic acid affects expression of genes encoding enzymes that convert dietary ALA to EPA. (Image 3) Note that dietary linoleic acid, in both humans and animals, shifts tissue ω-6: ω-3 ratios by affecting the ω-3 side of things. Linoleic acid does NOT have much effect on arachidonic acid (ω-6) levels, despite ARA being downstream of linoleic acid. This provides an answer to a common argument “seed oil defenders” put forth: dietary linoleic acid doesn’t seem to affect arachidonic acid levels much, so intake levels don’t really matter for things like inflammation regulation. Linoleic acid is affecting ω-6:ω-3 of influencing the conversion of ω-3s. The ratio matters (Image 4), and it’s sensitive to dietary linoleic acid.

Someone should make a body horror movie about the pressure women are under to rely on medication in order to conform to youth-coded body types to the detriment of their health and danger of their lives
Jennifer Sey@JenniferSey

Demi is skeletal. And before you @ me about body shaming - this is unhealthy. For the press to glorify skeleton arms as "toned" is just as bad as glorifying obesity as "healthy at any size." Why can't any of the women cosplaying at self-acceptance actually do the thing?

Organized Dogmatism Controls the Message about Gender Bias in the Academy ABSTRACT: "The “dominant gender narrative” in science holds that bias against women is pervasive and occurs in every domain, including tenure-track hiring, letters of recommendation, awards, grants, journal publications, authorship assignment, citations, salaries, promotions, and teaching evaluations. Many of these claims are repeatedly broadcast despite their nullification by larger, stronger studies and meta-analyses that do not find gender bias. Because these stronger studies are cited less often, there exists a false belief among many faculty that gender bias is omnipresent in the tenure-track academy. As an example of this false belief, 248 U.S. faculty were surveyed about their beliefs regarding gender bias. They overestimated the extent of such bias in every domain. We illustrate this misalignment of beliefs by focusing on just one of the many domains in which bias against women is alleged but has been nullified by stronger studies: tenure-track hiring. We show that the dominant narrative of pervasive bias in favor of hiring men is not supported by the evidence. The reality is the opposite of what is believed, with women preferred over comparable men: multiple sources of evidence demonstrate that in tenure-track hiring in the United States and many European countries, women have an advantage over equally-accomplished men. Yet, the claim of bias against hiring women faculty continues to be widely cited in the premier science media. Challenging the gender narrative should be part of normal scientific discourse; however, doing so often evokes a backlash—as documented in testimonials by researchers who have been attacked."
