Politicians experience the effects of robust speech personally, and arguably that has been most evident among the ministers in this Government. Lisa Nandy flounced off X, citing rising levels of abuse and the spread of “misinformation”. Despite being the Secretary of State responsible for the media, she chose to leave the platform rather than engage in debate or challenge what she regards as misinformation and disinformation. Her department, DCMS, has also published a Green Paper, Watch this Space, which proposes requiring social media platforms to give greater prominence to public service broadcasters such as the BBC, which it regards as “trustworthy”, while downgrading other outlets. Lucy Powell is also proposing stricter regulations for social media platforms such as X and Facebook that would effectively police open political debate during election periods by treating private citizens like broadcasters. Yesterday, 13 July 2026, was supposed to be a significant day for the Statutory Independent Inquiry into Grooming Gangs. It was the day, according to the Inquiry's own Terms of Reference, that they were legally required to publish the criteria for selecting investigation areas. They didn't do it. Plaid Cymru separatists continue to pay for legal advice for asylum seekers. Yet they haven't found cash to fund their free childcare pledge. Immigration and asylum aren't devolved. Childcare is. Two beautiful Red Setters were left shut in a hot car on Saturday the hottest day of the heatwave while their owners went and played golf. They died in there. According to reports, police said they’d issue a statement… and then went quiet. Now people are worried nothing will happen. Let that sink in. Two living, breathing dogs probably trusting their humans right up until the end suffered and died because someone decided a round of golf mattered more than their lives. We all know how fast a car turns into an oven in July. We’ve all seen the warnings. There is no excuse. These weren’t “mistakes.” This was a choice. If the police and RSPCA don’t follow through with proper action here, what message does that send? That our dogs’ lives are disposable when it’s inconvenient for us? I’m angry. I’m heartbroken for those dogs. And I’m tired of seeing this happen every summer with barely a slap on the wrist. Some people shouldn’t own a budgie, let alone dogs. What sort of moron leaves two animals locked in a car on one of the hottest days of the year? Those poor dogs didn’t just die they suffered and baked to death. It’s cruel, it’s utterly irresponsible, and there is simply no excuse for it. What do you think should happen to the owners? I certainly think there should be servers consequences including imprisonment.

📢NEW REPORT 📢 86% of sexual crimes in Northern Ireland swim changing rooms are in mixed-sex changing villages. Our latest report into sexual crimes in Northern Ireland leisure centres confirms that mixed-sex changing rooms are a danger area for women and girls. In Northern Ireland 86% of sexual crimes in swimming pool changing rooms occurred in mixed-sex facilities. The data correlate with our previous research from England and Wales which shows that 88-90% of changing room sex crimes occur in mixed-sex changing rooms. Freedom of Information requests to the Police Service of Northern Ireland revealed that 86% of sexual crimes (voyeurism, illicit filming / photography, sexual assaults and rapes) which occurred in leisure centre changing rooms were in mixed-sex facilities compared with 24% which occurred in single-sex facilities. The FOI request covered 12 months from January to December 2023. Previously, we published Leisure Centres: Putting Women and Girls at Risk containing police data collated from a Freedom of Information (FOI) investigation on sexual crimes in leisure centres in England and Wales. These data showed that in one year (2023) there were 16 rapes, 80 sexual assaults and 65 acts of voyeurism across 257 leisure centres in England and Wales. As there are approximately 860 leisure centres in England and Wales, and as these crimes are under-reported, the totals will be much higher. The Sports Councils have actively promoted mixed-sex changing villages as the preferred option for new build and refurbishment projects. @Sport_England design guides are widely used throughout the UK for new-build and refurbishment projects. Sport England states that mixed-sex changing villages are the ‘preferred option’ but says that local councils must ‘risk assess’ their designs. Councils rarely conduct risk assessments that take into account the increased risks of allowing males into areas where women and children are in a state of undress. Women’s Rights Network calls for: ✅all new-build and refurbishment projects to be designed with single-sex changing as the default option with mixed-sex changing for families; ✅all mixed-sex changing villages to be risk assessed as a matter of urgency and controls put in place to reduce the risk. The Free Speech Union will challenge any public body that tries to silence legitimate criticism of Islam through a backdoor anti-Islamic blasphemy law. We were successful in getting South Wales Police to drop its sinister and censorious bespoke “anti-Muslim hostility” guidance, which instructed officers to record any incident they deemed to go beyond “legitimate” discussion of Islam, after we threatened the force with legal action. The Free Speech Union hopes this serves as a warning to other police forces and public bodies across the country that we will challenge any attempt to impose a backdoor Islamic blasphemy law. We are aware that West Yorkshire Police is in the process of rolling out anti-Muslim hostility guidance, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council has already adopted it. Speaking at ARC, the General Secretary of the Free Speech Union spoke about the global assault on free speech. He told GB News’s Will Kingston: “I think the assault on free speech, particularly online, is a global phenomenon, and seems to be particularly true of the English-speaking countries, Commonwealth countries, and the United States. “There are lots of different reasons for it. But I think fundamentally, since the ebbing away of the Christian tide, we have a new religion occupying the public square, a new public morality, and it is the woke radical progressive ideology we’re all familiar with.” Read more below 👇
