A man once esteemed as the principal of Light Schools Academy, now condemned to face torture and imprisonment. He was under the protection of the United Nations, no less. Where is our conscience as a nation? Where are we headed, if even the shield of international protection can be shattered so easily?

I strongly protest the illegal abduction of seven Turkish nationals in Kenya by agents of the repressive Erdogan govt. They are under UNHCR protection. One of them is my friend Mustafa Genc (extreme left) who hosted my talk in Nairobi in 2022 on Mahatma Gandhi and renowned Sufi scholar Fethullah Gulen. Yesterday morning, 7 Turkish asylum seekers namely Mustafa Genç, Abdullah Genç, Hüseyin Yeşilsu, Necdet Seyitoğlu, Öztürk Uzun, Alparslan Taşçı and Saadet Taşçı were abducted in Nairobi by unknown masked gunmen. Three of the abductees have since been released, while 4 remain unaccounted for. The @LawSocietyofKe condemns the heinous violation of human rights and calls for immediate investigations to identify the perpetrators and locate the 4 missing persons. We note that Kenya has obligations under international law to protect the rights of all persons resident in Kenya. We further note that the Mutual Legal Assistance Act is clear that Kenya will not provide legal assistance to any foreign operatives with respect to matters of a political nature. The identification, tracking, enforced disappearance and seizure of property of the 7 individuals is, therefore, illegal in toto and inconsistent with Kenya's commitment to uphold the rule of law. Such acts of contempt against our sovereignty and constitutionalism cannot be condoned. We demand that the @DCI_Kenya and @IG_NPS act swiftly and decisively in getting to the bottom of this matter. #TransnationalRepressionKE
