@GordonGChang China could take the little island of Tiawan easily. It could invade with millions of troops and put an embargo on Tiawan. Instead, China plays the long game and Tiawan will eventually want to join peacefully.

At the moment, China’s military is incapable of invading the main island of Taiwan, but this period of incapability will not last forever. Therefore, this is the perfect time to go ahead with arms sales. The sales would fortify deterrence and maintain peace.

Xi’s message at the US-China summit was simple: stay out of Taiwan. That’s not diplomacy. It’s a threat. Taiwan is what Xi cares about most — more than tariffs, markets, or any deal. The Chinese Communist Party doesn’t get to dictate American foreign policy.

@JimHansonDC China is now developing chips that are slower than American chips but catching up. If we dont sell them our advanced chips now, we lose billik s of dollars in profits that can be reinvested in new methods to make chips.

And Taiwan becomes the expected fly in the ointment. China cannot expect the US to acquiesce in any way to their desire to take over Taiwan. The production of advanced chips there is too vital for US tech advancement to allow those facilities to fall into the hands of China. Xi and China see them as the savior of their tottering economy and a lever to use against the rest of the world. But the previous agreements and arms sales to Taiwan were a combination of support for freedom against Communist aggression and also recognition of the manufacturing aspect. Now that chips are the engine to drive the future there is no way those facilities will become the Communist ICBMs of this generation. Xi knows this, but he has to posture. The question is what does he really think he can get?

@JohnFarren15 Iran has complied with the non proliferation treaty. Iran doesnt have nuclear weapons. However, it may decide to withdraw given the attacks by Israel and America.

@ReggieL77393713 Unlike Israel, Iran is a signatory of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and is bound by that. In addition, the US has obviously no intention of treating the two countries equivalently. If Iran comes close to obtaining nuclear weapons, it will almost certainly face a nuclear attack.

@JohnFarren15 It also makes sense to show the USA we can make a nuclear weapon. Why did Iran stop at 60%? It was easy to go to 90 % and make a nuke. It could be done in a few months.

@ReggieL77393713 Enrichment for peaceful purposes only requires 10% (5% for normal reactors). Going over that at scale, and certaily to 60%, only makes sense as if aiming at nuclear weapons.

@ReggieL77393713 No, the policies of Kennedy and Johnson were almost identical. Johnson simply accepted, as Kennedy probably would have done, the Israeli accomplisment of plutonium nuclear weapons. Enrichment inspection makes no diffrence to that. It's an entirely different production process.

Part of me wishes that those outside Iran who so eagerly defend its regime could experience, even for a day, the life this regime has imposed on Iranians for 47 years: its “human rights” the UN praises, its “anti-imperialism” that the left romanticize, and its “strength” the media portrays. Part of me wants them and their families to get a taste of the same suffocating restrictions, the fear, the violence, and the lost futures that Iranians have lived with daily. But I refuse to let that resentment define me. If I did, how could I claim any moral difference from those whose hatred of Trump or Israel blinds them to the suffering of the Iranian people? I will keep being the voice of Iranians fighting for #FreeIran, which means a better life even for those who stand as a roadblock in front of it!
