it’s amazing how little narrative momentum there is in Michael, and how passive his relationship to his art seems. it’s kind of an insult to his talent despite also giving all his collaborators short shrift. there’s no insight into his craft, or the development of his taste.

Your friends who work nonprofit jobs and suddenly buy a $1M apt in Prospect Heights, maybe they’re really good savers. Or maybe their parents just gave them the $200k down payment. And maybe they’re not being truthful about which one it is!

Lots of people are willfully obtuse about the concept of “secret family money” in nyc. The girl who never works but is always wearing designer may be scouring eBay or Poshmark for deals. But if she grew up rich, it’s far more likely her parents are just paying her cc bill.

NEW: The FBI and Federal prosecutors in New York say they've charged Sean Pildes, the leader of "SantaCon" an annual charity fundraiser in NYC, with allegedly pocketing a significant amount of the proceeds himself. Pildes was arrested this morning and charged with wire fraud.

What the regime does so incredibly well is managed decline, meaning, they ratchet down quality of life bit by bit, but make each ratchet down cool and desirable. Decrepit becomes sexy. Living on credit becomes distinctly a part of the American struggle. They create the portrait of a sexy rebel being held down by the man, even though they are the man doing the holding down. To avoid this, they create a phantom "the man," in this instance non-existent white WASPY RW billionaires (see eg One Battle After Another), to point the finger that, that exists somewhere off in the distance, barely visible but obviously evil.
