One year ago today, on the Fourth of July, our nation celebrated the blessings of freedom while families across Texas experienced unimaginable heartbreak. We pause today to remember every precious life lost at Camp Mystic and every other life taken far too soon in that tragedy. We remember the children whose futures were just beginning, the counselors and adults who stood courageously in harm’s way, and every family whose lives were forever changed. Their names, their stories, and their memories will never be forgotten. No words can truly ease the pain of such profound loss. Yet even in the darkest moments, we witnessed the very best of America. To every law enforcement officer, firefighter, EMS professional, dispatcher, game warden, pilot, medic, search-and-rescue specialist, and every first responder who answered the call, thank you. You ran toward danger while others were running away. You worked through exhaustion, heartbreak, and impossible conditions with courage, professionalism, and compassion. Your service honored every life you were fighting to save. To the countless volunteers who showed up without being asked—neighbors, veterans, church groups, ranchers, boat owners, businesses, families, and complete strangers—you reminded us that the strength of our communities is measured not only by what we say, but by what we do. You brought supplies, comfort, equipment, prayers, and hope. You asked for nothing in return except the opportunity to help another human being. That spirit defines Texas. As we remember those we lost, let us also remember the enduring responsibility we share: to love our neighbors, to care for those who grieve, and to ensure that the memories of these lives continue to inspire acts of kindness, service, and sacrifice. Finally, I want to offer my deepest gratitude to the men of the BEARKAT team. There are simply no words sufficient to express what you endured or what you accomplished. You answered a calling that demanded extraordinary courage, unwavering resolve, and selfless service. You carried burdens that few will ever fully understand, and you did so with quiet professionalism and humility. It is impossible to thank you enough for all that you did. Your actions brought comfort to grieving families, hope in moments of despair, and honor to everyone you represent. Texas will forever be grateful, and your service will never be forgotten. May we always remember those we lost, honor those who served, and carry forward the enduring truth that even in our darkest hours, courage, compassion, and faith will always light the way.
