Charlie Ballou on my staff attended the ribbon cutting, grand opening, and anniversary celebration of Jamie Cater’s Around Town Carousels Project. Jamie Cater is known across Meridian for her work on Meridian’s carousel horse program. Started in 2000, Around Town Carousels Project is a community-wide art display of more than 80 horses. This year, Jamie unveiled the newest addition, “Handy,” to the art display project.

This National Police Week, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of law enforcement officers who work every day to keep our communities safe. We remember those who gave their lives in the line of duty, and stand with all who carry on their legacy. #NationalPoliceWeek

As the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement, I want to highlight some of the dangerous individuals captured by the Department of Homeland Security. It is my goal to keep you updated on the great work our men and women in law enforcement are doing to keep our communities safe.

Kyle Jordan on my staff attended the 50th anniversary of Mississippi State University’s Stennis Institute. The institute is named for former Mississippi Senator John C. Stennis, who served our state in Washington from 1947-1989. Established in 1976 as a service and research arm of Mississippi State University, the Stennis Institute has been an integral part of our local, state, and federal government. I’m thankful for their work and proud to see the legacy of the last 50 years the Stennis Institute has had on our nation’s politics.

Fun Fact Friday: As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, I want to highlight some of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
George Read is known as the father of the State of Delaware. He was born in Maryland and moved to Delaware to practice law. Read was one of the two statesmen who signed all three of the great State papers on which our country’s history is based: the original Petition to the King from the Congress of 1774, the Declaration of Independence, and the original Constitution of the United States. He served as the President of the Constitutional Convention in 1776. Later in life, Read served as both a U.S. Senator and as Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court.

Today, we celebrate Victory in Europe Day (VE-Day). American Armed Forces ended hostilities in Europe 81 years ago, when Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allied Forces. This led to victory in Europe and signaled the end of the war in the European Theater. I am thankful for all our brave servicemembers who fought to preserve freedom and help America win the Second World War.

@tperkins @LeaderJohnThune @BillCassidy @SpeakerJohnson Thank you, @RepMichaelGuest, for standing for the safety of women and children who are still being harmed by a Biden-era push to put dangerous abortion drugs in mailboxes across the U.S.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: MDOT crews are continuing cleanup efforts this morning after severe overnight storms in south Mississippi brought down trees and power lines, resulting in several road closures.
Current closures include:
• U.S. 51 between U.S. 84 and Monticello St. in Lincoln County is BLOCKED due to downed power lines and debris.
• State Route 184 between U.S. 84 and SR 43 in Lawrence County is BLOCKED due to fallen utility lines across the roadway.
• Portions of State Route 583 at Douglas Trail in Lincoln County remain BLOCKED as crews work to remove storm debris and restore safe passage.
The public should avoid travel in these areas unless necessary and allow space for emergency responders, MDOT maintenance forces and utility crews to continue cleanup and restoration operations.
Although I-55 between Brookhaven and Bogue Chitto is OPEN, drivers should anticipate temporary shoulder or lane closures as crews work to push remaining debris from the roadway.
Please slow down and be on high alert for MDOT crews as they continue clearing debris. Their safety and yours depends on it!

Do you have damage from last night's severe weather?
MEMA encourages residents who’ve received damage from the storms to:
• File an insurance claim.
• Take photos of the damage to the home.
• Report damage to their county/MEMA via the self-report tool.
Click the link, select your county of residence, and fill out the form.
This is NOT AN APPLICATION FOR ASSISTANCE. msema.org/report-damage

Today, on the National Day of Prayer, I ask that you join me in praying for our fellow Mississippians whose homes were damaged or destroyed by yesterday’s devastating storms and for those injured.
Scripture tells us in Philippians
4:19 that, “God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
