OpenAI's Sora is out! Creating video from text. Similar models from other tech companies will likely follow. There are COOL technical things and NOT COOL social things to know about. A super quick 🧵. 1/

This is wrong on so many levels. @jeffjarvis there's no such thing as "an AI", piles of linear algebra ("mathy maths" as we call them on #MAIHT3k) are not the sort of things that have rights, and when they ingest large amounts of text to extract co-occurence patterns of words >>

At today’s Senate Judiciary hearing on Journalism & AI, Jeff Jarvis plans to testify that “the real question is whether AI should have the same rights that journalists & we all have: the right to read, the right to learn…” Wait till he hears that AI can’t read or learn! 🤯

Can we all resolve to stop pretending the natural, species-typical biological processes on which our society (including its ethics) is built are in any way legally or morally equivalent to the deliberate actions of corporations? #AIEthics #ethics #digitalGovernance #NewYear #AI

If a human reads an article and can paraphrase the content, we don’t treat that as infringement. But if some direct function of the article could be found in our brain and we could demonstrate every step of the transformation, I bet copyright law would be much less forgiving.

This is an outstanding talk. I have to admit I don't read Rao here much – he tweets even more than I do – but his present discussion of OpenAI is also very funny. But this talk is seriously one of the best and most important things in #AI & #AIEthics comms I've seen this year.

Thank you @jpmorgan--and my dear friend Manuela Veloso leading your #AI research division--for the invitation to speak at your #AI Summit today. Here 👇 are the talk slides and audio of my presentation. I was blown away by the audience energy, thoughtful questions, as well as the countless one-on-one interactions with your #AI researchers and practitioners.. 🙏 "Can LLMs Really Reason & Plan?" I was recently on a panel with several other professors and we were asked to give some tips to graduate students in machine learning. It got me thinking about why professors are so bad at giving advice. So here are some reasons why you should not take advice from professors.

@ruchowdh When asked for European women, first it returned a list of US researchers and then a list including men! 🤦‍♀️
