Rethink The Deal

@RethinkTheDeal

Rethink the Deal is asking a question more leaders should consider: Why do high-performing states contribute billions to a federal system that gives them less?

California’s progressive tax policies often receives criticism, but they make social welfare programs in California -- like childcare services -- possible. The real issue is how unfair California’s deal with the federal government is. California receives just $0.86 for every dollar it sends to a system that works against them. Maybe it’s time to start addressing the core issue and demand a better deal.
Governor Newsom Press Office@GovPressOffice

California Derangement Syndrome has blinded people’s ability to see that California is a donor state — giving more money to the federal government than it receives.

The reality is that donor states include both red and blue states. This isn’t a partisan issue -- it’s a shared challenge that requires us to look beyond party lines and work together to demand fairer deals for all donor states. Visit our website to see a map of states caught in an unfair deal with the federal government, and consider signing our petition: rethinkthedeal.com.

Blue states vs Red states. What a freaking joke.

On top of the $143 million in federal school funding and the millions in clean energy funding withheld from New Jersey, the Garden State is locked in a titled deal with the federal government -- receiving just $0.61 for every $1 it sends to keep Washington running. We stand with the 84% of respondents who believe that the federal government is corrupt. New Jersey deserves a fairer deal, @SenatorAndyKim.
Senator Andy Kim@SenatorAndyKim

Corruption is corrosive. Whether at the state, local, or national level, it causes Americans to lose faith in our government.   That is why we must fight against corruption everywhere we find it and deliver a government that works for you, not against you.

Minnesota receives just $0.63 for every $1 it sends to the federal government -- and now, with prices at an all-time high -- Minnesotans are choosing between Christmas dinner and Christmas presents. We suspect the drama would really start if Minnesota chose to rethink this deal.
Angie Craig@RepAngieCraig

With prices at an all-time high, Minnesotans are having to choose between putting food on the table and presents under the tree. President Trump thinks they’re “dramatic.” I think he should get coal in his stocking.

We have an idea: Massachusetts receives just $0.70 for every $1 it sends to the federal government.  Maybe it’s time we address this unfair deal so that Massachusetts can support one of the world’s largest economies without having to ask hardworking residents to pay more.
Brian Shortsleeve for Massachusetts@ShortsleeveMA

Maura Healey just doesn’t get it: Massachusetts families and businesses are already being crushed by taxes, we don’t need another payroll tax! There’s plenty of money in the state budget for all sorts of priorities if you cut out waste and fraud. As governor I will get state spending under control starting on Day 1. As a state that ranks within the top 25 largest economies in the world on its own, there is no reason that 300,000 residents should be worried about their healthcare costs. On top of that, the federal government shortchanges Massachusetts every year, giving the state just $0.70 for every $1 it contributes. It's time to stop pretending this is fair. It's time to demand a better deal.
Governor Maura Healey@MassGovernor

Over 300,000 people in Massachusetts are facing massive premium hikes because Congress didn't do their job.     If you're one of those people, we just launched a new @HealthConnector tool so you can compare plans and pick the best one for your family.    But make no mistake: Families can't afford these out-of-control costs. President Trump and Republicans need to get serious and extend the credits.     Get an estimate at mahealthconnector.org.

Americans need lower prices. Wages haven’t kept pace with inflation. Economists worry about a recession, but families are worried about making it through the month. We're not asking for pre-pandemic prices, we just want prices we can afford, @MorePerfectUS.
Rep. Marcy Kaptur@RepMarcyKaptur

No, I’m pretty sure the people I talk to across NW Ohio want lower prices. But not surprising that the Billionaire who bought the Washington Post for fun is pushing this kind of propaganda.

While Trump threatens to strip over $3 billion in funding to fight homelessness, NY only gets 76¢ back for every $1 it sends to the federal gov't. New Yorkers are already being shortchanged & now 170,000 people are at risk. Does this sound like a fair deal, @NewYorkStateAG?

NY AG James@NewYorkStateAG

I'm suing the Trump administration to protect over $3 billion in funds that provide vital housing and services to fight homelessness.    Cutting off these funds could put over 170,000 people at risk of homelessness.    We must protect our most vulnerable neighbors.

Withholding $4B in winter heating is blatant neglect, @SenPeterWelch. Many of the affected states send more to the federal government than they receive in return. If Trump can withhold lifesaving funds, can states rethink how much they send to Washington in the first place?
Senator Peter Welch@SenPeterWelch

The Trump Administration is withholding $4 billion in federal funds that help families heat their homes over the winter. This funding was passed on a bipartisan basis and helps bipartisan communities. President Trump: do your job, release the funds.

With @GOP and the Trump administration's dereliction of duty, @GovernorShapiro is stepping up to ensure Pennsylvanians can travel safely.
Governor Josh Shapiro@GovernorShapiro

BREAKING: I’ve authorized nearly $220 million to be made available to @SEPTAPhilly – so they can make necessary safety repairs to over 200 Silverliner IV rail cars, upgrade trolley infrastructure, keep riders safe, and continue to deliver reliable, on-time service. Senate Republicans have refused to come to the table to pass long-term funding for transit — but I refuse to let the 800,000 Pennsylvanians who rely on SEPTA go without reliable, safe mass transit.

Gov-elect @MikieSherrill is suggesting NJ may need to withhold federal tax dollars in response to the Trump admin’s politicization of aid. Newsom floated this months ago. People are starting to ask whether Washington is keeping its end of the bargain.

Notable: Gov.-elect @MikieSherrill is taking a page from the Newsom playbook and is considering that NJ withholds federal tax dollars in protest of the Trump admin. Worth noting nothing materialized when @GavinNewsom made similar comments months ago. politico.com/news/2025/11/2…

Lower costs? Yeah right. We're right with you, @SenatorAndyKim, as a recent @FortuneMagazine article underlines the exact opposite. NJ residents are already paying more to the federal gov't than they get back: 61¢ back for every $1 paid. This isn't fair.

Senator Andy Kim@SenatorAndyKim

Let's set the record straight. Donald Trump has nothing to brag about when it comes to lowering costs for American families.   We have his tariffs to thank for the high costs we're seeing this year at Thanksgiving.
