Symptom descriptors and patterns in lumbar radicular pain caused by disc herniation: a 1- year longitudinal cohort study bmjopen.bmj.com/content/bmjope… radicular pain & lumbar disc herniation experience several highly bothersome symptoms, all of which are not necessarily painful

😵💫 Still getting tripped up by disc terminology? You’re not alone. MRI reports throw around words like bulge, protrusion, extrusion and sequestration, but these terms are not all the same. This quick visual breaks down the key differences so you can interpret disc findings with more confidence. Want the full clinical reasoning behind radicular pain? @DrSethPT @marklaslett_NZ Simple answer, retraction is completely different loading on the cervical joints than extension in sitting. It is nothing to do with shear or range (see Penning next tweet) It is not a new bowel stimulus either, as it is a functional movement use often used in sport.

Studies by Penning et al showed That in protrusion and retraction this is the greatest motion of the OA joint and thus may explain the common production of headaches in protrusion and therpeutic effect of Retraction for some headaches. ajronline.org/doi/pdf/10.221…
