The City Council has had six days to take action and pass Ryder’s Law, yet they haven’t said a word. The question is are they refusing to take action to make people safer, to stop the inhumane treatment of animals, or both?

Horse-drawn carriages have been an iconic fixture of Central Park for generations. But tradition alone can’t justify the risks they pose to both the horses and the people around them. It’s time for change. Here's how we're taking action while working to support drivers:

An African woman named Anigar Monsee is organizing a GoFundMe claiming she may be deported after she was convicted in Pennsylvania of felony aggravated cruelty to animals. The Liberian woman posted African "cooking videos" to YouTube showing her torturing, skinning and beheading live animals in her kitchen. She failed to convince the court she was being persecuted for showing traditional cultural cooking methods. She is due to be sentenced in July in Delaware County.

In light of the evidence demonstrating that their operation in NYC is inhumane and unsafe, will the opinion page editors reconsider the paper's perspective on the issue? Note to the editors: The @NYCCouncil would have assuredly passed the bill to ban horse-drawn carriages by now if the Transport Workers Union, which represents the owners (not the workers), wasn't pressuring city lawmakers to vote against it.
