My story: From Waiter to $200k MRR (it's long)
That’s me seven years ago. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I just took a random job as a waiter while studying logistics at uni.
I didn’t like logistics, and I hated the restaurant job. It was painful. I was lost.
So I started experimenting and trying new things. A friend of mine recommended programming, and I gave it a shot. I built my first HTML page and realized I’d found my real passion.
In the meantime, I got laid off, found another restaurant job, and kept studying, but now I had purpose. I wanted to learn web dev and turn it into my career.
A year and a half later, I landed my first programming job, and my life completely changed. I remember sitting in the office, doing what I loved, and almost crying because I finally didn’t have to serve anyone anymore.
But one thing stuck in my head: I wanted to create my own thing. A job had limits. I had to ask for raises. I wanted full control.
About four years ago, I discovered Indie Hacking, and I immediately knew this was it. I wanted to build my own $10k MRR SaaS.
Then came three years of failures, quitting, coming back, and quitting again, five unfinished projects. I remember scrolling Twitter, seeing all those MRR screenshots, and thinking I’d probably never make it. The only thing that kept me going was my 9–5. It made me feel like I still had stability, like I wasn’t a complete failure.
But I kept experimenting, quitting, and returning. Then I grew my first project to $1k MRR. For the first time, it felt possible. I started to understand how everything worked.
The downside was that I stopped doing anything besides work. My 9–5 and my projects took every hour, every weekend. I quit all my hobbies, sold my car, and locked in to figure this out.
In September 2024, I partnered with @tibo_maker on one of my projects that was stuck at $300 MRR. He brought fresh ideas, and we started grinding.
I’ve never worked as hard as I did in those first months of Outrank. It was dark, head-down time. But I knew this was my chance. We had everything we needed to grow the project to the moon:
- Tibo’s audience
- Tibo’s experience
- My understanding of the field
- My hard work and product skills
- AI becoming insanely good for building
And... Somehow, we managed to turn it into a $200k MRR project... It still feels surreal. Still feels like a dream. Still feels like I got lucky.
As a bonus, I also earned some serious back pain that I’m still fighting. 😅
I lost a lot on the way, but I gained the one thing I always wanted: proof that I can build something significant.
The lesson for you? If you’re truly obsessed with what you do, sooner or later, with a lot of hard work and experiments, you’ll find your way to make it happen!
