The NHL existed just fine for 70+ years without any Russians. They joined in when the USSR collapsed so they could make money in America. But in the last 20 years, hockey once again became political in Russia and has turned into a weapon of war. They should go back home.

I don't know how many times I have to say this, but hockey can survive without Russia. Russia only started playing it as a political project in Stalin's era. It still exists as a purely political project, with all the cheating it entails. Hockey doesn't need them. Just facts.

The hockey fan in me would love to see Russia in the Olympics. But we overestimate them a bit as a hockey power at this point. In the five best on best Olympics since 1998, they’ve never won gold and only got to gold medal game once (28 years ago). They have failed to even medal in their last three Olympics, which included prime Ovi/Malkin years. In 3 World Cups of hockey during that time, have never finished in top 3. Sure, it would be a way better tournament with Russia involved. But Canada, USA and Sweden are unquestionably the three biggest hockey powers in the world at this point.
