@RickGiolito @EmmaRincon @dongulling The server gets a portion of that 20%. Likely half. He’d have to share the full 20% tip with the rest anyway. Most restaurants automatically collect tip shares from servers based on % of sales.

I went to a steakhouse in Miami, paid the bill, and they automatically added a 20% tip. When the waiter brought the check, he said: “That tip goes to the whole establishment—if you want to leave something for me, it’s extra.” I didn’t add anything else—20% is already too much. He gave me a dirty look, like I was robbing him. This tipping culture is out of control.

@JohnLewisshop @ngprecision @EmmaRincon @dongulling John, the restaurant is only required to pay minimum wage. The service charge is there to assure they can do it, but, the restaurant is not required to give any tips over that $7.25/hr minimum to the waiter.

@JohnLewisshop @ngprecision @EmmaRincon @dongulling Under fed law, employers can pay a lower cash wage ($2.13/hr) and use a "tip credit" to make up the difference, provided tips bring the total to at least the $7.25/hr fed minimum. It’s why they have a service charge. But nobody can survive on $7.25/hr which is why waiters ask.
