I challenge you to go for a stroll around Potts Point, the most architecturally celebrated neighbourhood in Australia, and come away thinking that almost every single building should be illegal. That's what our current planning, design and building laws have done!

@RigaDimd @peter_tulip @jonobri LA is in the US. The point remains, Governments should not have any legal right to dictate the aesthetics or appearence of buildings or other arcitecture forms. Beautiful buildings start with the right to build ugly buildings

Improving the aesthetics of new buildings is important. But how to do it is unclear. Judgements by a committee of bureaucrats are likely to make things worse. As is codification of rules.

@RigaDimd @peter_tulip @jonobri First Amendment primarily applies in public context. Media is public. Everything you post on the internet is public. Your clothing is public. Flags are hung in public. Political signs are public. All of these things are equally as public and all are 1st amendment protected.

@The_Fair_Ground @peter_tulip @jonobri Architecture is different. Art can be put in a museum or in a home. Architecture is public. The public domain is a common, and we need to think about it differently.

@RigaDimd @peter_tulip @jonobri Who makes those pattern books? Who decides what is "local tradition"? Who enforces noncompliance? The answer is you don't: Arcitecture must be protected by the 1st amendment, so no government can make any rules on how buildings need to look. Its how all other art is treated.

Getting close to topping out second building. It’s been tough. First month me and our Dir of Arch and Cons were on site daily 7:30am - 7:30pm with masons. 4 weeks straight. Had to lay stones for them, correct small details, put up leads—had to act as lead mason, essentially. Now our Superintendent and Field Tech know how to do these things which has freed me back up. But we are having to hold masons hands the whole way. We were supposed to be going faster with 2 simultaneous crews going, but 2nd crew got scared of trying. Along with 10+ other crews. We’ve rearranged schedule to make up some time elsewhere, but ultimately it’ll just be 6 weeks slower than we’d planned. On development side we’re okay; still going through equity, no bank debt yet so no unplanned interest. We’re in budget. And it’s looking freaking amazing—and word is getting out on lease up. But, this isn’t for the faint of heart. I get asked all the time “how to do this”. I tell most people don’t try. Unless you are really, really committed, and are willing to blow up your schedule and work 80 hour weeks just to keep it on track. Thankfully I have an amazing team and we are that committed. My goal is to make it easier over time. Train more masons, clear documented systems, etc. But when innovating, it is hard—and you have to make up for a lot with sheer effort. It’ll make the final product all the sweeter, knowing what went into it.

"Can a community that casts into the shadows the unborn child, the elderly, the sick, those who suffer in silence, or those who depend entirely on the care of others be called fully just?" "Every human life must be recognized and safeguarded from conception to its natural end, in every circumstance of its existence. When this certainty is obscured, the most vulnerable are the first victims, and the law loses its deepest meaning: to serve and protect every person."
