So you can't do facadism, and you have to be respectful of the existing design, but if you design an adaptive reuse that is so good you can't even tell it's new, the planners also think that's bad ?

The commonwealth should be setting ambitious housing targets for all these sites up for sale. There should be an implicit agreement with the states that they have to come to the party to facilitate the necessary housing. And forget about these small minded NIMBYs

In October 1647, ordinary British soldiers who had just won the English Civil War did the unthinkable. ⚔️ They sat face-to-face with their generals in a Putney church and demanded the right to vote for everyone, not just wealthy landowners. ⛪🗳️👇 The generals wanted to restrict voting to men of property, arguing: "If you give the vote to men with nothing, they'll take everything." 💰 But the soldiers. Known as the Levellers. They refused to back down. They argued that a poor man's life mattered just as much as a rich man's. 🛡️ Common trooper Edward Sexby spoke directly to Cromwell, stating they had risked their lives "to recover our birthrights as Englishmen." Another famously declared: "The poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he." 🗣️ The ruling class didn't listen: 🚫 Cromwell shut the debates down. ⛓️ The Levellers were arrested. 🩸 Leader Thomas Rainsborough was murdered the following year at just 37 years old. Every word of their debate was written down, then lost for 250 years before being discovered in an Oxford library in 1890. 📚🕯️ But their ideas survived the silence. The foundation they laid fueled the American Declaration of Independence 🇺🇸, the French Revolution 🇫🇷, the Chartists 📜, and the ultimate victory of universal suffrage. 🌍 It took 300 years to prove those soldiers right. The time to return to the streets is approaching. Now that the Islamic Republic is collapsing, my message to the country’s military, law enforcement, and security forces is clear: You have sworn an oath to protect Iran and the Iranian nation, not the Islamic Republic and its leaders. Your duty is to defend the people, not to defend a regime that has taken our homeland hostage through repression and crime. Join the nation and help ensure a stable and secure transition. Otherwise, you will sink with Khamenei’s ship and his crumbling regime. And my message to the President of the United States, President Trump, is this: The honorable people of Iran, despite the brutal repression and killings carried out by this regime, stood bravely for nearly two months. I now ask you to exercise the utmost possible caution to preserve the lives of civilians and my compatriots. The people of Iran are your natural allies and the allies of the free world, and they will not forget your assistance during the most difficult period of Iran’s contemporary history. And to you, my dear compatriots in Iran: In these sensitive hours and days, more than ever we must remain focused on our ultimate goal: reclaiming Iran.
