@gorakaunhai the fact so few people move from Sydney to Melbourne given how much cheaper it is, is very strong evidence of Sydney's enormous superiority

@db_econ Though it pains me to say it: Melbourne is clearly the place to be.

It's really pretty remarkable that none of the many planning researchers in the country have thought to quantify how planning controls vary across Australia's cities. That changed this morning. The zoning atlas is an immense public service, have a look.
Jonathan O'Brien@jonobri

More than *three quarters* of all residential land across Australian capital cities is highly restricted. Today we @yimbymelbourne launch the Australian Zoning Atlas: the first nation-wide analysis of land use planning controls.

@pleasedontatme @jonobri I'm trying to think what technological progress these people could ever think would be beneficial. Infinite cheap books in your pocket (kindle) they all hate because of corporate vibes

in the last ~five years we’ve created three new obesity shots, made EVs at a price point normal people can afford, done a bunch of useful things with mRNA and CRISPR. even if you hate LLMs and software there’s a lot of cool stuff happening!
Seth Harp@sethharpesq

Technology is making the world worse. Nothing good has been invented in the last 25 years. Superfluous, spurious innovations that seem impressive at first, like the iPhone, take back more than they give and ultimately benefit only oppressive governments and their oligarch allies.

@SardineTruther I'm partial to a Seidler. It's part of what makes the area so great- it's a hodgepodge from all different eras (even a few modern builds). But yet again planning work against this desirable outcome

@DrCameronMurray If I were to show you a large number of sites developing that were highly ex ante feasible (change of use in this article's parlance) but were purchased for developers without any meaningful land value increase, how would you interpret that?

The term housing feasibility is meant to be important, measured and mapped. But the term is used to mean two different things—commercial feasibility and change-of-use feasibility. Find out why this difference matters fresheconomicthinking.com/p/why-a-feasib…

@aron_woosnam 100%, I live in one. There's meaningful tradeoffs here but we haven't made them in any consistent way, instead we just deny they exist.

@db_econ To be fair, some of these buildings are shit holes to live in. Windows don't seal, doesn't have heating/cooling.

zoning atlas reminding me of me fav example of the arbitrariness of our planning vagaries. south of the line? big skyscrapers. north of it? like 2 stories. Of what use were the rules if they brought us to this?
