I am so very sad to learn that the great actor Michael Pennington has died. We were together at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre for the best part of 13 yrs. Over the years whenever we met we would talk ‘Shakespeare!’ He was one of our great Shakespearean actors. RIP Dear Michael.

During the past year Google Docs started suggesting "have gotten" when I type "have got", despite being set to English (UK). I mark this "suggestion is wrong" but it's obviously a losing battle - most under-25s seem to say "gotten" now. Presumably in a decade I'll have given up.

Harriet Harman, who has previously stated that “transwomen are women” has just been appointed by Keir Starmer as his ‘Advisor on Women and Girls’. This Labour government continues to make a mockery of women and biological reality.

Finally ITV has dropped the toxic Nadia Sawalha. Here she is last year saying there’s a “group of people” who want their “pound of flesh” about Louis Theroux and his ”brilliant interview” with Bob Vylan. She just got worse after that. A long time coming.

My teacher, Jane Cowan, d otd 30 years ago. The more I play and teach, the more conscious I am of her legacy. I am so grateful for her idealism, her deep love of music/composers, her imagination, her holistic approach, and her ability to inspire us by making it all seem so easy!

For a previous employer I used to travel around the north west of England a lot. In Wigan a roll was a ‘barm’, and in Blackburn it was a ‘tea cake’. It was a minefield negotiating meals!

@OceaniaSceptic @theiaincameron I think an oven bottom cake is browner on the top too - and my husband would disagree with you about tea cake. No currants for him. Tea cake to me means dried fruit.

@theiaincameron Barm cake it is. There's also a flatter type known as an oven bottom. A tea cake should have currants; it's a plainer version of the Easter speciality the hot cross bun.

🇩🇰 Copenhagen's Green-led council is limiting elderly care residents to 80 grams of beef per week for climate reasons. That works out to 11.4 grams a day, which is less meat than most people put in a single taco. A Green party rep explained the logic: the elderly "have been the biggest climate sinners throughout their lives." So the plan is apparently to make them atone for it in their final years, one thimble of mince at a time. Critics, including opposition parties and elderly advocates, say the policy risks undernutrition in a population already vulnerable to it.
