Valve’s new VR headset “Frame” (previously codenamed Decard) is very likely to be announced this week. Here are a few key points: 1. Performance Due to chipset constraints, Frame’s performance will likely be only slightly above Quest 3 — don’t expect a major leap. Display quality should also be in a similar range. 2. Form factor It’s expected to be noticeably lighter and slimmer than Quest 3, aiming for a more portable, everyday-carry type of design. 3. Controllers The two 6DoF VR controllers can snap together into a single standard gamepad, allowing users to play traditional Steam titles seamlessly. 4. Ecosystem This is the biggest highlight. Players will be able to access both native VR content and their existing Steam library, effectively bringing the entire PC gaming ecosystem into a headset form. 5. Content catalyst There’s also a potential bombshell: a VR version of Half-Life 3. If it launches alongside Frame, it could instantly ignite the PC VR market and significantly boost sales. 6. Long-term view Valve has always played the long game. I believe it will still be active in this market a decade from now. Given the hardware limits, lifetime sales for this generation will probably land around one to three million units — nowhere near the tens of millions achieved by Quest. Leaks suggesting an initial 500k-unit order seem consistent. But what really matters is that Valve secures its PC gaming ecosystem foothold. As long as it keeps iterating steadily, its position will only strengthen over time.
