@whatisnuclear @isabelleboemeke Until US maritime reactors get the same whole-of-gov level of support like Savannah, the effort will have to be industry-led, and that means developing a US-flagged/owned/operated vessel that the navy isn’t worried could be dual use. I want to see it happen just like you!

@RiverBennett @isabelleboemeke Why is it a non-starter? Again, the N.S. Savannah was intended by the USA government to bring forth commercial nuclear power. It goes against the Atomic Energy Act to get in the way of nuclear-powered civilian shipping.

@whatisnuclear @isabelleboemeke Also having too much overlap between civilian and Naval designs is a non-starter for NNSA / ITAR. But that’s just the US context. Who knows about china.

@whatisnuclear @isabelleboemeke Very true but the supply chain today for PWRs at sea is entirely geared to navy. The maritime sector sees that configuration (and the required staffing and fuel enrichments) as too expensive.

@isabelleboemeke I have NO IDEA! They should start with mature sea-faring reactors to decarbonize NOW and swap over to newly developed reactors if/when they mature for this purpose. Doing PWR now could save 10+ years.

I asked stable diffusion what it thinks photovoltaic systems would look like in the style of various artists. 1/ Claude Renoir

@nuclearkatie I was at a concert last weekend where a guy at the bar just handed me a wristband unsolicited and said "you look old enough"

We're compiling a reading list for the 2022 @NuclearBootcamp cohort - our first in-person group since 2019. What are some must-reads that have been published during the last few years? #NuclearEnergy

The least cool thing about being a nuclear engineer is getting to go to so many cool places and being UNABLE TO TAKE PICTURES OF ALL THE COOL THINGS

Does anyone know a secret way to actually talk to a human at @StateDept about a passport problem. Their customer service phone line and email are very clear that every problem can be solved online, but my problem can't 🫤

Academia can be great (at least at times), but for climate/energy folks frustrated with academia there has never been a better time to explore impactful options in the private sector or non-profit space. Here are a few exciting positions available now:
