My understanding is that Japan and Japanese culture is based on ethnicity. If you immigrate to Japan, you will never become Japanese. Ever. You will never be accepted as Japanese, because you are not Japanese. However, if you immigrate to America you can become American and accepted as American quickly. America is an idea, based on universal values. Not ethnicity. If you disagree, please let me know.

I lived in Latin America for about 10 years, and enjoyed it. But when I returned to the US I almost kissed the ground. I had no idea how good we have it here, and how culture defines everything. If one is confused about the differences in cultures and why the US is a high trust society with material wealth and opportunity, just spend a couple of hours driving in Latin America. You will see the lack of consideration and its consequences. We have some of that here of course but it’s night and day from Latin America. By the way, I am not positing that our culture is better. Latin American culture is beautiful, particularly the emphasis on family. However if we’re going to talk about why we can have nice things, we have to talk about cultural differences.

Indeed, I come from Latin America—I’ve lived in Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru—and the difference is enormous. But you notice it even more after living in the United States and then going back to countries in our region. For example, in December we were in Kentucky, and at the airport there was a nursing room. We went in there with our one-year-old baby, and we had a private room just for us, where our baby was able to take a one-hour nap while we waited for our flight. These are very small things that Americans take for granted—things they don’t even realize they have—that in other countries are still very far from existing. Likewise, last week during some construction work, an electrical line was damaged, and our building lost power for about half an hour. But they quickly blocked off the street, and linemen arrived to restore power. In my country, that would have taken weeks. There’s even a bit of culture shock when Latin Americans get used to living in the United States and then return to their home countries, whether for vacation or to move back permanently. Americans should be more appreciative of their country and the opportunities they have, even though social media algorithms sometimes make them feel like everything is going wrong.

It's really weird, but living in LatAm for almost 1.5 years has made me much more proud to be from the USA. It's so easy to take the United States for granted when you live there. The efficiency, the cleanliness, the wealth, the opulence, the speed of everything. It's truly a one-of-a-kind place. It's obviously not a perfect country, but damn, there is way too much negativity floating around the internet about the USA. Yeah, yeah, yeah... It's built on the back of forever wars and slavery. That's the cost of an empire. But that aside, there's not another place on Earth with the same opportunity and access to essentially everything you'd ever need to live a good life. I realize I'm in LatAm for now, but this is less of a reflection of the US, and more of a reflection of my own urge to travel and learn Spanish and immerse myself in other cultures. It's truly impossible to know what your fishbowl is like if you've never left it for substantial amounts of time.

It’s shaping up that the Justices will consider one key question. Do illegal aliens (and their children) owe loyalty to anothet sovereign government? If yes, the language of the 14th amendment and debates before its passing indicate that birthright citizenship explicitly does not apply. If no, the 14th amendment does apply and the children are automatically citizens solely by virtue of having been born on US soil.

On a ship in the Navy, at night the bridge is completely dark. The Captain once walked into the bridge at about 2 in the morning unannounced. The highest ranked watch stander was sitting on a bench, sound asleep. Essentially invisible since it was pitch dark. The Captain said something to him, and he played it off like nothing happened. Later, he told everyone on the bridge “When the Captain walks in, someone needs to say ‘Pearl Harbor’ so I know he’s here. That was a surprise attack!” So after that whenever the Captain walked in someone would say “Pearl Harbor!”

To my American friends, I want to speak from the heart, because this moment truly moved me as a Japanese citizen. When President Trump made that Pearl Harbor joke, it wasn’t just humor to us. It felt like a weight I’d carried my whole life was suddenly lifted. My chest tightened, and honestly, tears came close. For 80 long years, we Japanese have lived under a heavy shadow — the constant expectation to apologize, to reflect, to stay in “guilt mode.” Even though we’re the closest of allies, that old wound never fully healed. We felt bound by the past, by the Constitution America helped write for us, always a little smaller, always needing to prove we were sorry enough. But in that single joke, Trump did something powerful. He turned a painful history into a shared laugh between equals. It was like he was saying: “Hey, it was a long time ago. We’re good. Let’s move forward — as brothers.” No more endless atonement. No more living in the shadow of being the “former enemy.” The curse broke. Japan feels free to stand tall again. Right now, cherry blossoms are blooming beautifully all across Japan. 🌸 This spring, the sakura feels like a perfect symbol — a fresh beginning. Not two nations stuck in old roles, but true equals, proud brothers, shoulder to shoulder, ready to build the future together. To the American people: We don’t want to be subordinates forever. We want to be your real partners — strong, proud, and loyal. The kind of allies who ride or die together. Thank you, Mr. President. Thank you, America. The strongest alliance in the world is rising again — as equals, as brothers, forever. #PhoenixRising 🇯🇵🤝🇺🇸🌸

I continue to follow the situation in the Middle East with dismay. Like other regions of the world, it is torn apart by war and violence. We cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of so many defenseless victims of these conflicts. What wounds them wounds all of humanity. The death and pain caused by these wars is a scandal for the entire human family and a cry that rises to God!

@tedlieu Not all military service members are US citizens. Only US citizens may vote in US elections. Therefore, a military ID does not establish proof of citizenship and consequently is not sufficient identification to use to be eligible to vote.

The individual you reference did not render a salute, and therefore the Secretary did not return with a salute. The individual did not render a salute, nor did the Admiral, because Naval personnel do not salute uncovered (without a hat on) unlike Army personnel. It is my pleasure to educate you and others viewing this.

@arabornot It’s not so much rank as it’s proximity to power. The scene is overdramatized though. No way she’s getting my office, and she can get her own coffee with that attitude. The intel mystique only goes so far. Breaking out the ruler doesn’t help anyone.

One negotiation tactic is to deliver 1.4 billion dollars in cash after the other side, who has killed American servicemembers and intelligence personnel after taking American diplomats hostage for over a year, disingenuously agrees to wait 15 years to develop a nuclear weapon. I guess the reader will have to decide which is the better play here.

History does not support this statement. Indeed, history disproves it. To take just one example, peace in Europe in 1945 was not achieved through dialogue. Peace was achieved by men executing extreme violence in support of a policy of forcing the enemy to an unconditional surrender.

I am following with deep concern what is happening in the Middle East and in Iran during this tumultuous time. Stability and peace are not achieved through mutual threats, nor through the use of weapons, which sow destruction, suffering, and death, but only through reasonable, sincere, and responsible dialogue.

@chicfryrice Mexican culture is warm. Family is emphasized. But culture is ni mejor, ni peor. Don’t judge. And look at the stats. Domestic violence, respect for women, racism. The US factors better. Neither the US nor Mexican culture overall is “better”. The difference lies in emphasis.

Mexican and American cultures are polar opposite. Mexicans place family first. They help one another financially, live together, and are a tight unit. Americans put career and monetary success first. Very individualistic a sink or swim mentality. The single founder in his 50s is looked up to. The family man with a 9-5 not as worthy.

If ever there were a story that spoke to the cruelty of the ICE sieges, it was Ofelia Torres's desperate fight to free her dad from detention, even as she was fighting a losing battle with cancer. The heroic Chicago girl died Friday. She was 16.

Some people are surprised that Marco Rubio gave such an explicitly pro-colonialist speech, given his family is technically of Cuban descent. HOWEVER, Rubio made it clear he does NOT identify as Cuban. He identifies as a US American of European descent. In the same speech, he praised the European colonialists who ethnically cleansed the Native Americans and founded the US, and he stressed "we will always be a child of Europe". Rubio then proudly traced his ancestry back to Italy (Piedmont-Sardinia) and Spain. Rubio does not identify with Cuba, Latin America, and the Caribbean; he identifies with Western colonialists. And Rubio emphasized that he, in his capacity as the chief of the US empire's foreign policy, wants to revive Western colonialism.

This is insane. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio just gave one of the most explicitly pro-colonialist speeches I have seen in the 21st century. The US empire wants Europe to help it recolonize the Global South. Rubio praised Western colonialists for "settl[ing] new continents, build[ing] vast empires extending out across the globe". Then Rubio complained about the Global South's decolonization, portraying it as a sinister communist plot. Rubio lamented: "The great Western empires had entered into terminal decline, accelerated by godless communist revolutions and by anti-colonial uprisings that would transform the world and drape the red hammer and sickle across vast swaths of the map in the years to come". Rubio delivered this speech at the Munich Security Conference, surrounded by European leaders, who gave him a standing ovation. They loved the pro-colonialist diatribe. The US secretary of state insisted that North American and European imperialists should unite in order to reverse "the West’s managed decline", to revive "the West’s age of dominance", to "renew the greatest civilization in human history". This is a blatant call by the US empire to resuscitate Western colonialism and recolonize the Global South (which represents the Global Majority). What the US empire did to Gaza, Venezuela, and currently Cuba is what it wants to do to the entire Global South. This is from the official transcript published by the US State Department: state.gov/releases/offic…
