What a far cry from today's leaders. Umar cared for all - Muslim and non-Muslim alike. Famously, not even his family got preferential treatment. And that's why it's so tragic that today, in the UK, Muslims are cast as the "problem" – when our tradition has deep, lived answers to the biggest societal questions of our time. You want a more cohesive society? Let's talk about a more just financial system that address the corrosiveness of interest-based money creation. When the game is rigged, there's no point putting on a band-aid. Inequality breeds resentment and hate. And in the wrong hands - it is turned against minorities. You want prosperity? Let's talk about an economic model that has movement baked into it. Zakat promotes people to actively invest and take risk - not passively sit on cash in a rentier economy. You want a business-friendly country? Let's talk about a society that was one of the largest economies for centuries. A small state, a strong private sector - but also a country with enormous endowments and charitable giving. Studying our history shows us we have the blueprint for the future. I am as British as Nigel Farage. But unlike him - my tradition gives genuine answers to the problems of our country.
