@JCooke0909 @janna_e_haider American associate professor here! We address all faculty who teach at university as professor even if they don’t have a doctorate. I always tell my students: professor for everyone and doctor for those who you know have a doctorate or who have called themselves that.

Emailed a student with his faculty advisor copied. Signed it “Professor Haider.” Faculty advisor is a white man who outranks me. Advisor hit “reply all” and addressed me by my first name but signed off as “Dr. Lastname.”

I see people questioning the genius of Jane Austen and the Beatles. Sorry but sometimes the conventional wisdom is correct. We take their innovations for granted because every subsequent artist was influenced by them. Being contrarian doesn’t make you elite, it makes you wrong.

Unfortunately some kids use “guess and see if it’s right” in all aspects of their education. I see this sometimes in my intro CS classes. The idea of trying to pick the best tool first and applying methods to similar problems is foreign to them. Decoding words is problem solving.
