@itismarkharris @Outkick I got 4 Wednesday tickets this year in the lottery. Got to take my 2 sons and my brother. Amazing day. Weather was perfect. The course was immaculate. If you love golf, you have to go there at least once in your life.

@PGATUOR If you're a golf fan and it's your only way to ever get in, it's worth every penny. Augusta is a pilgrimage everyone should get to do once in their life.

In case you wanted a last-minute ticket today, here’s the price: Say you were in the area. Is this price worth it?

@Jordan_W_Taylor My all time favorite manufacturing process that I witnessed was attaching a turbine rotor to a huge flywheel spinning it to an outrageous RPM and then slamming the turbine shaft into the spinning rotor. It made a god-awful noise.

From pipelines to ships to cars to nuclear fuel, our world could not exist without welding, and my God there are a lot of ways to do it! We owe our lives to the wizards of the weld. Find out just how much, with this week's Big Technical Article. Enjoy! jordanwtaylor2.substack.com/p/how-the-worl…

The discussion about the Monty Hall problem yesterday reminded me of another time when Marilyn caught grief from a lot of people. She said that for families with only two children, the odds of both children being the same sex was 2/3. People yelled at her, called her stupid, etc., so Marilyn asked her large readership to respond if they were either one of a two sibling family or had only two children themselves, reporting the sexes of the pairs. Many thousands of responses latter and the numbers were roughly 65%-66% (I can't remember exactly because it's been a long time). Some people were stunned by the numbers, still thinking that it should be a 50-50 split. It should not and here's why: Thing of the possible combinations of two children: 1) Two boys 2) Two girls 3) Boy and girl* 4) Girl and a boy* You will note that groups 3 and 4 are the same combination: two children of the opposite sex. So there are really only three combinations: 1)Two boys 2) Two girls 3) One boy and one girl Two out of the three possible combinations are same sex siblings.

@LadyDemosthenes @JustBearlySane @steng88 @physicsgeek Yes, by your logic there are 3 possible combinations, but that does not equate to the percentages of the outcomes. Because there are two types of mixed outcomes (boy-girl, girl-boy), the odds are 50% that you will have one of each.

Y’all, the original tweet explains it SO well. Go back and read very slowly. Who is born first doesn’t matter. A family with two kids will either have: Boy / boy Girl / girl Boy / girl (girl / boy) Doesn’t matter if the boy is older or the girl is older, it’s having one of each. That’s it. Hence there are only three combinations possible.

@GrantGooch @JustBearlySane @steng88 @physicsgeek So your saying that if I have a boy first, the is of my second child also being a boy is 2/3? What if it was a coin flip, and the first flip is heads is the is of the second flip also being heads 2:3? If so, I'd like to make some friendly wagers with you.

@JustBearlySane @steng88 @RobBergen6 @physicsgeek Do the children magically become the same sex depending on whether the girl or boy was born first? If not, then it doesn't matter which was born first. You will either have two boys, two girls, or one boy and one girl. In 2 of the 3 cases the children are the same sex.

@steng88 @RobBergen6 @physicsgeek No. The odds of *each specific pairing* happening is 1:4. 2:4 of the groups are same sex and 2:4 of the groups are different, therefore it’s theoretically 50:50. In practice it’s not, because it’s not fully random due to other factors, but just off of the genetics it’s not 2/3.

When my kids move out, I want to give them each a pre-made junk drawer. Four kinds of tape (duct, masking, Scotch, packing), small assortment of screwdrivers in popular sizes, crescent wrench, Allen wrenches, stamps & envelopes, Ronsonol, matches, good pair of scissors, box cutter & scraper & blades for both, icepick, wand lighter, Sharpie, wood glue, super glue, small rasp... basically all the stuff I wish I'd had in my first apartment by about Day Three on my own. What'd I miss?

Having a toddler in the spring time is amazing. They have such an inborn interest in everything. I spent most of my weekend walking around the woods telling her the names of the plants and birds, catching a frog and a snake, seeing deer and woodchuck. The pure joy of her seeing a turtle swimming in the creek has been a highlight of my life. As we were packing into the car after one of our hikes this weekend another family was getting out with a kid about the same age as mine. They loaded her into a wagon and handed her an iPad with cocomellon playing. I almost vomited.

Houston airports have been hit the hardest during this shutdown with the highest rate of TSA employees calling out. Last week, travelers spilled outside the terminal and down two levels. This is a beautiful site now for travelers as lines are moving fast and no one has to wait in the makeshift lanes.
