I don't know about other places, but here in Austin I think teachers start at $56K and go on up to $100K with experience and additional credentials. If they're broke at payday, they just don't manage their money very well. It also helps to be married, but I know that is out of style. My parents were both school teachers and made far less than teachers today, but they raised three kids. Yes, the retirement benefits were very good...

American teachers share how much money each of them has in their bank account 2 days before payday - 1st teacher was hoping to at least have $40, she only has $7.46 - 2nd teacher has $17 - 3rd teacher has $31 - 4th teacher has $63 - 5th teacher has $1.13 - The last teacher thought she has $500 but only has $126 These are American teachers working every day to educate our kids and most barely have $20 bucks in their bank account Meanwhile everyone from Somalia or Africa can move here and stealing tens of millions of dollars and drive hundred thousand dollar sports cars The system is so broken

@VanessaForATX These kids needed discipline and order growing up, not being told they were the greatest thing ever. We're up to our fundaments in "compassionate support systems" and "mental health services" and they haven't done anything.

This weekend, Austin experienced a level of senseless violence no one should ever face. My heart goes out to everyone impacted - including the victims, their loved ones, and every Austinite who feared for their safety...

@AndrewKolvet Running the "regular" grocery stores out of business is his plan. Get everyone shopping at government stores and you control what they can and can't have. Because government-run liquor stores have worked out so well where they have been tried...

BREAKING: NYC Mayor Mamdani just flipped Ronald Reagan's warning upside down: "I disagree." "We are going to use the power of government to lower prices and make it easier for New Yorkers to put food on the table." His answer is government-run grocery stores that will use taxpayer advantages to undercut private competition.

the Left whines that ICE doesn't provide due process, yet they cancelled Chavez without any real process at all. How many of those raising their voices against Chavez could stand the kind of scrutiny he has had? None of us is perfect. Treating women badly (assuming he did) is bad, lifting up thousands of poor workers is good. Find a balance.

In a matter of weeks after sexual misconduct allegations were published, Cesar Chavez's name and face were erased from public spaces. But not everyone in Austin supports those swift actions — and it often comes down to a generational divide. kut.org/austin/2026-05…

You must be young. The Vietnam war was hugely more unpopular than Iran. Even the Korean war was more unpopular (hey, watch an episode of M*A*S*H). Iran is just a pimple on the butt of those wars, where many thousands of American troops died. Get your priorities in line and take your thumb out of your mouth.

@shipwreckedcrew You guys killed your Independent support. Iran is the least popular conflict in US history, we are at the precipice of a VERY bleak economic period, high inflation is a certainty, AND energy crises are beginning to show around the globe.

@Azren_rzn @FreyaDaviss @rushicrypto Elon Musk, by the way, had squat ($2,000) when he left South Africa. Being born to wealth isn't the plan, it's WORKING and EARNING money that's the plan.

If capitalism is so great, why do corporations need so many tax breaks, subsidies, exemptions, grants, legal protections, bailouts, and trade protections? When citizens need these things, why is it socialism?

Hey, I grew up poor: the son of school teachers. I'm now retired. Between those times I saved my money and invested it. I had good advice and it grew nicely; compound interest is an amazing thing. All it takes is deciding to do it and sticking with it. Everyone should be saving, even if it's a dollar week. It will add up and grow.

@erob40213 @MrJohnJnr I'm guessing you're young, aren't you? When some of these kids decide to protest and screw around (you're not learning anything holding a sign and chanting), they disrupt things for kids who actually want to learn. Your fists' rights end at the tip of my nose.

@MrJohnJnr I hope they all took the suspension. Because that’s BS. He wont suspend the entire school. This is the problem. PEOPLE have the power. Not authority’s. There’s way more of us than them. I would say cool, I’ll sue the school district they’ll fold & fire you. Still bout that life?

🚨 BREAKING: A principal in Pennsylvania just drew a line and didn’t blink. Students tried to stage an anti ICE walkout during school hours. Daniel Weber walked straight outside and shut it down. His message was simple. You want to protest on school time? You’re suspended. That’s called leadership. Schools are for learning. Not activist field trips. Not political theater. Parents send their kids to get an education, not to join street rallies in the middle of the day. More backbone like this. Less chaos. More adults in the room. 🇺🇸 FOLLOW ME, THE NEXT DROP WILL BE SHOCKING

@Mark_in_SF @JustinWolfers Did you know that, a few years ago, Elon Musk set a record for the highest income tax ever paid by a US citizen? How much more of his money do you think you deserve? Does theft run in your family?

@JustinWolfers Why are we borrowing from the rich instead of taxing them? The rich will be the ones asked to pay it back anyway. Makes no sense.

@JustinWolfers But recent illegal immigrants are not the ones paying taxes and paying off the debt. They seem to mostly be TAKING the state’s money not GIVING the state more money.

@FreyaDaviss @rushicrypto So why not become an “investor” yourself if you think they get preferred treatment? It’s easy to set up a 401K (your employer will likely do it for you) and you can direct your savings to be invested in anything that you think is a good idea.

We don't live in a capitalist country-we live in socialism for the rich. Privatized gains, socialized losses. Can't let "investors" loose to much of their gambles! You can now lose gambling on anything, though. Oh, the rich own 85% of all stocks? Anyways, must protect the market!

No, high tax rates reduce productivity. If you read novels from the 1950s, for example, you see that productive people, once they reached their high tax earning level, often just sat out the rest of the year. Why work more when the government is just going to take all of it. If you knew that, by August, you had reached an income where anything you earned for the rest of the year would go 92% to the government, would you bother to work any more until the new tax year? Who would?

@TrajansGhost So if you're against taxes and public funds, why don't you move to a country that has no taxes? The tax rate in the 50s for millionaires was 92%, that's why everyone was doing so well.

This is a remarkably stupid idea, especially giving everyone money. You want inflation, give everyone a lot of money. For example, look at the inflation we got from Biden’s COVID giveaways. Bernie has been singing this same song for decades. He just wants to bribe his way into power.

Since “caregiving” is self-reported, I don’t know if it’s a good enough statistic to drive public policy. It’s awfully easy for someone to say, “I can’t work, because I have to take care of grandma” instead of “I really don’t feel like working”. The idea that a fourth of the workforce is too “disabled” to work is ridiculous as well.

When discussing these studies, it’s striking how often the focus lands on earnings losses and the resulting caps on GDP growth. GDP matters and should be pursued, but not at the expense of human realities. Tradeoffs are inevitable within the limits of human capacity, time, and energy. Otherwise we’d be arguing that sleep is a GDP waste and kids belong in factories instead of classrooms. Prioritizing both production and care (+ health) is recognizing what actually sustains a flourishing society. (It’s not anti-growth)

@RepLloydDoggett I’m getting pretty tired of “billionaires” being used as the modern bugaboo. Everyone uses it and it’s lazy and meaningless. When I was young, it was “communists” and that was a no more useful argument. Please make reasoned arguments, no appeals to base emotions.

Gas prices directly impact every American. We need to put party politics aside and pass my American Families Gas Tax Relief Act (H.R. 8795) to temporarily remove the federal gas tax for 120 days, taking 18 cents off gas and 24 cents off diesel. This is commonsense legislation.
