inbound applications are dying. recruiters are drowning in 1,000+ resumes a day mostly ai-generated "slop." the result? hiring teams are ignoring the inbox and moving exclusively to referrals. if you aren't networking, you're invisible.

@kenwheeler They need super clear water with a narrow band of temperature, ph, and nitrites. My understanding is that experienced adults find it manageable, but inexperienced or kids get exhausted of the constant monitoring, management, and cleaning required.

This is the beauty of running a non-VC-funded operation like The Pragmatic Engineer: My ambition is not "more" (more newsletters/podcasts/readers/viewers/revenue etc - which would mean ongoing expansion) but "deeper" and "better" of what is already there.
The Pragmatic Engineer@Pragmatic_Eng

What’s next for The Pragmatic Engineer? @GergelyOrosz, founder, shares his vision for even more ambitious research and a Pragmatic Summit on each side of the Atlantic: "So the interesting thing is if this was a VC-funded company and I took VC funding, I would have to expand, but I don't. The only plan I have is I would like to make the Pragmatic Summit more regular. There was one in February in San Francisco. There will be one in the beginning of the year also in San Francisco. And I'd like to get to the point where I can have one in Europe as well, and I'd like to be able to do this on a more regular basis. So ideally my dream, but this is more down to logistics and energy on some of those things, is to have one in the US, a Pragmatic Summit, and one in Europe and London or somewhere else. And getting to that point, I will be very happy. And, I'm growing my team very slowly. We now have a small team, so I'm just figuring out ways that I can have folks involved and help with even more ambitious research I'd love to do, even going deeper. I have so many ideas of companies to research, industries to research, sometimes some boring industries. At some point I'd love to go into a utilities company and go through how they build software. It sounds pretty boring, but it's pretty darn important."

I'm still waiting for an OSS project fully maintained by agentic loops that isn't a complete slopfest. Everyone can generate code, not everyone wants to maintain said generated code.

@quorralyne I hope you'll forgive me for not standing and raising my hand proudly. I'm more sagely nodding and raising my hand just high enough for you to see and acknowledge before quickly lowering it again.

I've been quiet here because outside of work I've been focusing on my kids and personal growth instead of coding. But I'm still doing things. I was just awarded Team Member of the Month for my UI/UX work to an app that will be released next year! My day has been made! 😊

Interesting UX lesson for everyone: I'm not superstitious, but I didn't update Zoom for a year, because I didn't want version 6.6.6. Turns out I needed to in order to update to the actual latest version 7.1.0. Be mindful of cultural sensitivities and superstitions in your UI.

@Codydearkland Yes, and interesting side point, this depends a lot on neuro chemistry and how you try to motivate the “giving a shit”. It shouldn’t always be financial. Some people with conditions like ADHD don’t always give a shit for equity but love mission or interesting work.

Its a bit corny, but IMO, odds of winning compound when you create high "give a shit" scenarios. Create scenarios where people care big? Win probability goes up. Opposite, where they care less? Win probability drops. It's not the only thing; but it's def a big one.
