Celebrating a Successful Transition with Spatial @spatialAI We are delighted to announce the successful completion of a management buyout exit with the Spatial team. This transaction marks a significant milestone, benefiting both the early investors and the company’s management team. It allows Spatial’s leadership to continue building the business on their own terms, free from the pressure of seeking a strategic buyer. Our journey with Spatial began in 2016 when we first met the founders, @LydenFoust and Will Kiessling, at the Ocean Accelerator in Cincinnati, Ohio. Serra Ventures led their Series Seed round, which turned out to be the only venture funding they would ever need. Lyden, an ethnographer, and Will, an aircraft engineer, combined their unique skill sets to create a business that transforms social interactions from the internet into actionable data. This data has helped marketers solve critical challenges, such as selecting ideal locations for physical stores and enhancing e-commerce customer segmentation to increase sales. Like any entrepreneurial endeavor, Spatial faced its share of ups and downs. However, with perseverance, the team developed a highly automated and profitable business model. Over time, it became clear that while the business was thriving, its niche market limited its potential for venture-scale growth. Thanks to Spatial’s profitability, we were able to craft a creative solution—a management buyout which is good for the investors while returning ownership to Lyden and Will, enabling them to steer the company at their own pace. Reflecting on this seven-year journey has been incredibly rewarding. Lyden was just 27 when we first invested in Spatial; today, at 34, he is married with three children. As part of his next chapter, Lyden plans to purchase his family’s farm outside Cincinnati, where he will continue to grow Spatial while raising his young family.
