My favorite Lindsey Graham story.
Senator John McCain made a pit stop in Indiana to campaign for then-Congressman Todd Young (running for U.S. Senate) and then-Lt. Governor Eric Holcomb (running for governor).
As the three of them and outgoing Senator Dan Coats enjoyed lunch (seen in this photo I took) in a Indiana War Memorial conference room, McCain’s phone rang.
“It’s Lindsey!… *put on speakerphone* Hey Lindsey, I am in Indiana campaigning for Todd Young. Why aren’t you here helping?!”
“John, I want Todd to win. So I am keeping my distance!”

We’re less than a decade away from self-driving car services (like @Tesla) that will make this trip cheaper for a family and more convenient with less waiting than existing options for under a few billion dollars of new charging infrastructure nationwide, and people are still whining that we haven’t built an inconvenient high speed rail network for trillions of dollars that only autists and other fanatics will want to ride when it’s finished in 2075.
But that would require admitting that Elon Musk is more efficient than a socialist government.

@varadmehta But Lee also chairs the senate energy and natural resources committee… Cruz chairs the commerce, science, and transportation committee. Both of those are pretty plum posts. I think either would give up those gavels to chair Judiciary, but if they didn’t… next would be Hawley

@ASFleischman You know, I think more than anyone Graham saw in advance the decay in Senate confirmation processes. Which is why he was right to vote for Dem SCOTUS nominations (and I was wrong to oppose him doing so)

I will say this until I'm blue in the face: The Southern Realignment is best thought of as a series of four realignments: Mountains in the 1860s, suburbs starting in the 40s/50s, rurals start in the 60s/70s, and Appalachia in the 2000s.
