It's illegal to beat up inmates too but guards will beat you up if you cross them. Or "not see" when you're getting assaulted by another inmate. There are tons of firsthand accounts.

LSU is one of the schools that fought the absolute hardest against integration. In 1956 LSU cancelled a series against Wisconsin because the state had forbidden interracial games. LSU didn’t admit black undergrads until 1964 and didn’t field a black player until 1971.
