Check out our little summary of 10 years of the subseasonal to seasonal prediction project, and what our nice community should focus on in the future. Thanks again to all the masterminds behind this #S2S project! doi.org/10.1175/BAMS-D…

@StephenIThomson I suggest just asking for speed & reliability upgrades if its currently unusable. I think they usually just expand the VPN servers with more nodes to support more bandwidth throughput, simultaneous connections etc.

@StephenIThomson VPN here, it works well. They did upgrade it both in the 2010s after a storm closure, and again in early 2020 as the usage went up further. Each upgrade helped improve it so now its a lot better than say the early 2010s.

Our university recently shut down the 'jump server' we used to SSH into our linux machines when wfh, and has now placed everything behind the VPN. The VPN is slow and unreliable, so I'd like an alternative. I'd be interested in what other institutions do about this? #advice #wfh

@MattPattClimate @sosprey That MetDesk/wxcharts.com figure is an anomaly plot though, right? (their caption seems misleading). So a +38.9C anomaly added to a 1979-2010 climatology would probably agree with the Earthnullschool temps you link to...

In terms of proximal causes what aspects of the circulation are leading to these temperatures? What role do the Zonda winds have in these temperature extremes and how are they being influenced by the developing El Nino and warm sea-surface temperatures nearby?
Extreme Temperatures Around The World@extremetemps

South America is living one of the extreme events the world has ever seen Unbelievable temperatures up to 38.9C in the Chilean Andine areas in mid winter ! Much more than what Southern Europe just had in mid summer at the same elevation: This event is rewriting all climatic books

Now it's official, I'm delighted to say in June I'll start a 5 year fellowship at @EngineeringNCL on 'Climate resilient, net-zero energy systems'. Unbelievably excited and still all a bit overwhelmed to be honest! 🥲🥳⛈️ Lots of thanks are due: (1/2)

Our new paper (Me, Jochen Broecker, Alexey Karpechko, @SimonLeeWx, @michaelsigmond, @IslaSimpson4) out in December in @theAGU Journal of Geophysical Research looks to understand the fundamental building blocks of predictive skill coming from the stratosphere.

With such magnitúde MJO in phase 7 that connects to -NAO its important to understand that starting pattern of ScUral block is very good precursor as it reduces the risk of west based -NAO and if -NAO is to be achieved through that high pressure then its good for Európe cold.
