@HuwL1oyd The rural landscape of 1840s Wales was very different to the 20th and 21st century rural Wales with tenant farmers and small holdings dominating rural politics, but there is definitely a lingering ignorance of rural poverty among urban Wales (and the UK more widely)

The Rebecca Riots are, among other things, very interesting from the perspective of leftist prejudices against rural communities & their potential contribution to radical politics. Arguably these prejudices arise from urban ignorance of rural class politics & are self-fulfilling

🏴🇬🇧 In 1839 the farmers of West Wales were being crushed alive. So they put on dresses. And declared war. Their name was Rebecca. 🪓 West Wales. 1839. Rent to the landlord. Tithes to the English Church. And on every road, a tollgate. You couldn't move without paying. On the night of 13 May 1839 a crowd appeared at the Efailwen tollgate in Pembrokeshire. Every single one of them was dressed as a woman. Long skirts. Bonnets. Shawls. Work boots visible beneath the hems. Their leader stood at the front. They called her Rebecca. The name came from the Bible. Genesis 24:60. "Let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them." They destroyed the gate. The trust rebuilt it. Rebecca came back. They destroyed it again. The trust rebuilt it a second time. Rebecca destroyed it a third time. The trust gave up. 🏴 By 1843 the raids had spread across all of west Wales. Two hundred and fifty tollhouses destroyed. Two thousand people marched on the Carmarthen workhouse and tried to burn it down. Nobody knew who Rebecca was. That was the point. Everyone was Rebecca. One person died. Sarah Williams. Seventy-five years old. The keeper of the Hendy tollgate, Carmarthenshire. On the night of September 9th 1843 Rebecca came for her gate. She was ordered to leave. She refused. They set fire to the tollhouse. She walked to her neighbour's door. She said: "Dear, dear." And fell down dead. Those who were caught were transported to Tasmania. Never to return. 🏴 In 1844, Parliament passed the South Wales Turnpike Trusts Act. The hated toll on lime was halved. The trusts were brought to heel. Two hundred and fifty gates destroyed. One act of Parliament. The farmers won. Nobody knows who Rebecca was. Nobody was ever identified as the leader. Everyone was Rebecca. There’s something supremely saddening and enraging about seeing a hospital running on bare minimum power. Thinking about dialysis patients, babies in NICU, and others tonight in Cuba. This is a blockade of death.

@Lab4IndyWales @Joe___Allen @ClwydEnComu alot of tall buildings in the Valleys (from when they were the bustling and rich heart of Wales) with half utilised 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors, and the geography of the Valleys obviously necessitates building up in a lot of cases, need to plan transit around housing &vice versa too

The only way we get the housing needed is through pressure on gov, local gov, and enabling Housing Associations.

But, in the UK, it's that *both genders* have moved to the left, but women have just moved further.
Nevertheless, the assumption is that anything happening in the US *has* to be happening here too.

Looking forward to hearing what the magic Green strategy is for getting to 326 seats, as like Labour they would need to win the votes of white working class voters in Red Wall seats who are concerned about immigration, and traditional Con vs Lab swing voters.

Continuous revolutions, wars and changes in labour practices have shaped what is now the English countryside since the Romans first arrived, from the arrival of the Saxons to the enclosures. The experience was Diggers and Levellers and evolution, not john farm and his cows

For centuries, the pattern of community life in England showed little change. The farms, the manor house, the church, the inn, the village. And so we find it sometimes today, off the beaten track.

Street is in desperate need of trees. Even on one side to not block views of castle.
Also, red asphalt for the cycleway. Not only does it break up the sea of black tarmac, it blends better with the castle + with removal of bollards, it visually tells drivers its not car space.
