All the Marathon fanboys were telling me I was wrong when I said that the game is in serious financial trouble. Turns out that I was right.
Does anyone think that a mere <2 million units sold plus 28k max concurrent users is enough based on these budget numbers? No. At least not anyone who isn't delusional and isn't math illiterate.
The game is headed towards a early end of service unless the company can pull out a rabbit out of a hat and create content that a wider audience of gamers can enjoy.
A tiny niche of hardcore players is not gonna carry a game of this level of development budget.

Well, Forbes just confirmed that Marathon cost $250 Million to make. Throw in marketing and you are close to 400-450 million by AAA standards. Concord was also $200 Million to make. so another 400. Sony isn't going to shut down Marathon because execs would look really stupid losing nearly a billion dollars to hero and extraction shooters twice in a row. But this is a unmitigated disaster. In what world do extraction shooters cost 200M to make? All of Destiny 1 was 185M in adjusted dollars, and that was a huge game. Budgets in AAA are obviously out of whack, and it was during Covid that team sizes ballooned for no good reason except the money was flowing. They expected the returns and growth to keep going, it never did. Covid demand was a peak, not a trend, driven by lockdowns (bored people played games) and stimulus money. AAA studios must downsized and do so quickly. AA and Indie games have shown you can deliver superior returns for 1/10 to 1/20th the cost. But more than that, it's time to listen to the chuds if AAA wants to survive.
