The secret here is that market wages are not "below subsistence". Which then *must* be topped up by UC. Rather, we look at market wages and then think that it would be nice if people had more than that. So, we tax ourselves to pay UC to those people. We're the people saying they should get more. So, we're the people who have to pay the more.

And good to point out that this is us subsidising Tesco. Politicians of all stripes complain that the benefit bill is too high, so some (of the poor) will have to get less. But in fact we are paying to allow large corporations to pay below-subsistence wages.

Tesco are making £4bn a year in profit. About 50% of their staff are on Universal Credit. Why don't we crackdown on this unneeded benefit for billionaires?

The establishment is celebrating Farage’s troubles. Prematurely. The grievances that made him popular are still there - and Westminster is proving why. The Home Office is already looking at diluting its immigration reforms. The issue hasn’t gone away.

Ann Widdecombe...wasn't. And the evidence that she was a Shadow (sic) Justice Spokeswoman appears to be missing...even Talk TV called her 'Former Home Office Minister'.

I'll be honest I've not watched any news in the last month as been consumed with @rolandgarros @Wimbledon but this murder of Anne Widdecome is horrific and so sad.
It transpires her house details were shown on TV just a few days before she was murdered.

- no more triple lock
- double lock if only on state pension
- single lock if also have other income

Sure - around half have additional income in excess of the State Pension so an extra £2 a week is largely irrelevant.
But is you are in the poorest fifth of the pensioner population, £2 a week is a lot and lifting the state pension higher is needed.
£240 a week isn't much to live off and if you are a single parent working 18 hours on minimum wage the State should be chucking other stuff at them.
