@NicholasOShaug1 Not Swift, I think, but the king of Brobdingnag: “I cannot but conclude that the Bulk of your Natives, to be the most pernicious Race of little odious Vermin that Nature ever suffered to crawl upon the Surface of the Earth.”

Hitler killed the Jews. Stalin killed the Kulaks, an entirely invented social class. Pol Pot killed everybody who could read or write. Don't we all agree with Swift, that man is the most perfidious little insect ever to crawl under God sun?

@aledornell When Franco ruled Spain he tried to encourage a campaign for the "restoration" of Gibraltar. Britain has ruled Gibraltar for longer than Spain, and the Moors ruled it for longer than both combined, so the obvious solution is...

Besides all the discourse about whether the Argentinian claim on the Falklands is legitimate that has been relitigated dozens of times, I genuinely do not understand how this issue became so central to Argentine identity Spaniards don’t constantly bring up Gibraltar unprompted

@TheGameVeda @David__Osland To be fair(!) to the earlier Rothermere, after the violent BUF rally at Olympia in 1934 he turned against Mussolini and his support for Hitler was entirely limited to within Germany

Pleased as I am to see the Murdoch and Rothermere press attacking Farage as stridently as they previously lavished praise on him, I can't help wondering what has brought on the recent U-turn

It does say a lot about our collective anti-intellectualism that a romantic comedy from 1941 starring two of the biggest names in Hollywood has a proposal scene that references William Blake and Shakespeare and people today would consider it pretentious.

@kmflett Did no-one think to sell tickets for the Thompson-Sigal fisticuffs? It'd be much more fun (and dialectically interesting) than a couple of dozen people booting a ball about.

@amasterofarts @SebMilbank David Amess and Jo Cox may have been killed by people "of unsound mind", but the fact that their "unsoundness of mind" took religio-political forms is noteworthy.

I can't believe Ann Widdecombe, literal Ann Widdecombe, has been murdered. I feel like we're a much nastier country than the one I grew up, one in which surreal baudrillardian violence and violation periodically invades our ever less managed national decline. I'm so sick of it

It is crazy how much Dryden's fame has declined. He so dominated the literary scene of his age that it was known as the Age of Dryden. Now his translations are out of fashion; I also rarely see his name in bookshops, in either the poetry section or the drama section.

@JohnWight1 How, precisely, are the Falkland Islanders "ungrateful"? Why does Mr Wight think they "swan around in Union Jack underpants"? They would surely swan around in Argentine-flagged underpants, for the same reason Mrs. Paisley wore underpants with the Irish tricolour on them.

I have an Argentine friend who thinks the Falklands stuff is insanity (one of only 3 people in the country) and I asked her about the fact that Falklanders don't wanna be Argentine & she said the consensus is those who don't are settlers and should be forcibly expelled

Wollemia is a coniferous tree native to Australia. It's a 200 million year old "living fossil and known as the Wollemi pine Discovered in 1994 growing in a remote series of narrow, steep-sided, sandstone gorges. Surviving since the time of the dinosaurs. #FolkloreSunday

More than three decades after the Srebrenica genocide, families are still laying victims to rest. As thousands completed the annual Peace March, survivors and their children shared harrowing stories of loss, survival and why the world must never forget Europe’s worst atrocity since the Second World War, writes Anadolu’s Hazel Belkis Belge. 5pillarsuk.com/2026/07/12/eve…
